A magnetometer using spin-polarized K and 3He atoms occupying the same volume is used to search for anomalous nuclear spin-dependent forces generated by a separate 3He spin source. We measure changes in the 3He spin precession frequency with a resolution of 18 pHz and constrain anomalous spin forces between neutrons to be less than 2x10(-8) of their magnetic or less than 2x10(-3) of their gravi...

The heat capacity of pure 3He in low density aerogel is measured at 22.5 bars. The superfluid response is simultaneously monitored with a torsional oscillator. A slightly rounded heat capacity peak, 65 microK in width, is observed at the 3He-aerogel superfluid transition, T(ca). Subtracting the bulk 3He contribution, the heat capacity shows a Fermi-liquid form above T(ca). We can fit the heat c...

The equation of state of two-dimensional 3He at zero temperature has been calculated using the diffusion Monte Carlo method. By means of a combination of the fixed-node and released-node techniques, it is shown that backflow correlations provide a very accurate equation of state. The results prove unambiguously the non-self-bound character of two-dimensional 3He due to its Fermi statistics. We ...

Angular distrihutions of the ‘rC(d, 6Li)8Be reaction at i& = 78.0 MeVand the 1’B(3He, ‘Li)*Be reaction at E,,, = 71.8 MeV were measured. Transitions leading to ‘Be in the ground state and the 3.04, 16.63, 16.92, 17.64 and 18.15 MeV excited states were observed. A DWBA analysis was performed regarding the (d, 6Li) and (3He, 6Li) reactions as direct LY particle or triton transfers, respectively. ...

Nuclear effects in Deep Inelastic Scattering of polarized electrons off polarized 3He are analyzed in terms of a spin dependent spectral function taking into account S′ and D waves in 3He, as well as Fermi motion and binding effects. A simple and reliable equation relating the neutron and 3He spin structure functions is proposed. The spin structure functions (SSF) of the nucleon g 1 and g N 2 p...

As a result of an energetic accretion, the Earth is a volatile-poor and strongly differentiated planet. The volatile elements can be accounted for by a late veneer ( approximately 1% of total mass of the Earth). The incompatible elements are strongly concentrated into the exosphere (atmosphere, oceans, sediments, and crust) and upper mantle. Recent geochemical models invoke a large primordial u...

The proposed design of a fuel pellet containing liquid 3He enclosed in a spherical Be shell of 300 μm thickness and overcoated with D2 solid appears to be adequate for fueling large size d/3He tokamaks. Smaller pellets of this design could be used for near-term experiments. The pellet fabrication should be simple and the components are non-radioactive.

The level densities of 44Sc and 47Ti have been determined from measurements of particle evaporation spectra from the compound nuclear reaction 3He + 45Sc with an 11 MeV 3He beam. The level density of 44Sc has been compared to the level density obtained from an independent experimental method based on an analysis of α-γ coincidences from the transfer reaction 45Sc(3He,αγ )44Sc. The good agreemen...

Heat capacity measurements have been made down to 5 mK for 3He fluid films adsorbed in one-dimensional (1D) nanometer-scale pores, 28 A in diameter, preplated with 4He of 1.47 atomic layers. At low 3He density, the heat capacity shows a density-dependent, Schottky-like peak near 150 mK asymptoting to the value corresponding to a 2D Boltzmann gas at high temperatures. The peak behavior is attrib...

We report the growth kinetics of the 4He crystals with a small amount of 3He impurities around 0.8 K. The growth resistance was measured using the response of the charged interface with respect to an externally applied voltage. In 5ppm and lOppm 3He mixtures, it is found that ( I ) the relaxation process can be expressed as an exponential behavior, ( 2 ) the growth resistance becomes larger com...
