We deal with the minimal Lagrangian surfaces of the EinsteinKähler surface S × S, studying local geometric properties and showing that they can be locally described as Gauss maps of minimal surfaces in S ⊂ R. We also discuss the second variation of the area and characterize the most relevant examples by their stability behaviour.

Let M be either S×S or more generally, (2n−1) connected sums of S × S. We construct a simply-connected minimal symplectic 4-manifold that is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to M . We also construct an infinite family of smooth 4-manifolds homemorphic but not diffemorphic to M .
