Among the species that cause blue mold, isolates of Penicillium expansum are the most prevalent and virulent species, causing more than 50 percent of postharvest decay. We report the draft genome sequence of P. expansum R19 in order to identify fungal virulence factors and to understand the mechanism of infection.

The epiphytic bacterium Rahnella aquatilis, isolated from fruit and leaves of apples, was tested for antagonistic properties against Penicillium expansum and Botrytis cinerea on Red Delicious apple fruit. In "in vitro" assays, this bacterium inhibited completely the germination of P. expansum and B. cinerea spores, but it needed direct contact with the spores to do it. However the putative mech...

Penicillium digitatum and Penicillium expansum are two closely related fungal plant pathogens causing green and blue mold in harvested fruit, respectively. The two species differ in their host specificity, being P. digitatum restricted to citrus fruits and P. expansum able to infect a wide range of fruits after harvest. Although host-specific Penicillium species have been found to have a smalle...

Fungicides are the most common agents used in postharvest treatment of fruit and are the most effective against blue mould, primarily caused by Penicillium expansum. Alternatively, blue mould can be treated with antagonistic microorganisms naturally occurring on fruit, such as the bacterium Gluconobacter oxydans. The aim of this study was to establish the antifungal potential of the G. oxydans ...

Blue mold is one of the most serious postharvest diseases in apples caused by Penicillium expansum. The purpose this study to determine effect ε-poly-L-lysine (ε-PL) on pathogenicity P. expansum and explore potential mechanism from perspective organic acid. investigates ε-PL treatment growth acid production vitro vivo. When concentration was 50 mg/L, inhibited decrease pH value delayed medium. ...

Penicillium expansum, a widespread filamentous fungus, is a major causative agent of fruit decay and may lead to the production of mycotoxin that causes harmful effects on human health. In this study, we compared the cellular and extracellular proteomes of P. expansum in the absence and presence of borate, which affects the virulence of the fungal pathogen. The differentially expressed proteins...

Epiphytic micro-organisms isolated from fruits and leaves surfaces of apples from different orchards were screened for antagonistic activity against Penicillium expansum. From all micro-organisms tested the new strain CPA-5 of Pseudomonas syringae, isolated from organic orchard, was selected. This strain was very effective against Botrytis cinerea, P. expansum and Rhizopus stolonifer at various...

Spore germination is the first step for fungal pathogens to infect host plants. The pH value, as one of the most important environmental parameters, has critical influence on spore germination. In this study, effects of ambient pH on spore germination were determined by culturing spores of Penicillium expansum in medium with pH values at 2.0, 5.0 and 8.0, and involved mechanisms were further in...
