Transbilayer movement, or flip-flop, of lipids across the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is required for membrane biogenesis, protein glycosylation, and GPI anchoring. Specific ER membrane proteins, flippases, are proposed to facilitate lipid flip-flop, but no ER flippase has been biochemically identified. The glycolipid Glc 3Man 9GlcNAc 2-PP-dolichol is the oligosaccharide donor for protein N-glyc...

We consider four dimensional supersymmetric gauge field theories from brane configurations with the matter content given by semi-infinite D4 branes ending on both sides of NS branes. In M theory configuration, we discuss the splitting of the M5 brane into infinite cylindrical M5 branes (which decouple) and transversal M5 brane. The splitting condition appears naturally from the consistency of t...
We analyze GIT stability of nets of quadrics in P4 up to projective equivalence. Since a general net of quadrics defines a canonically embedded smooth curve of genus 5, the resulting quotient M G := G(3, 15)ss//SL(5) gives a birational model of M5. We study the geometry of the associated contraction f : M5 99K M G , and prove that f is the final step in the log minimal model program for M5.
DNA bending induced by six DNA (cytosine-5) methyltransferases was studied using circular permutation gel mobility shift assay. The following bend angles were obtained: M.BSP:RI (GG(m5)CC), 46-50 degrees; M.HAE:III (GG(m5)CC), 40-43 degrees; M.SIN:I (GGW(m5)CC), 34-37 degrees; M.SAU:96I (GGN(m5)CC), 52-57 degrees; M.HPA:II (C(m5)CGG), 30 degrees; and M.HHA:I (G(m5)CGC), 13 degrees. M. HAE:III w...
Group A streptococci (GAS) are common human pathogens that express major surface-associated virulence factors designated M proteins. In this study, we explored directly the cellular mechanisms behind their supposed ability to prevent phagocytosis. Isolated human neutrophils killed an M-negative GAS mutant (DeltaM5), but not the wild-type parent strain (M5). After 3 h, 3-4 times as many DeltaM5 ...
Brucella melitensis causes brucellosis, a disease affecting sheep, cattle, and sometimes humans. Attenuated B. melitensis strain M5-90, derived from virulent strain M28, is widely used as a live vaccine in ruminants in China. Genetic differences between the strains may cast light on the mechanism of attenuation. We recently reported the complete genomic sequences of M28 and M5-90. Genome organi...
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES We studied the function of both Pgp and MRP1 to identify subgroups of patients who could benefit from Pgp reversion, and to clarify in different FAB subtypes and in cytogenetic risk groups their expression and function. DESIGN AND METHODS We examined 132 adults with de novo acute myeloid leukemia (AML) for Pgp and MRP1 expression and function. We correlated our findi...
To improve butanol selectivity, Clostridium acetobutylicum M5(pIMP1E1AB) was constructed by adhE1-ctfAB complementation of C. acetobutylicum M5, a derivative strain of C. acetobutylicum ATCC 824, which does not produce solvents due to the lack of megaplasmid pSOL1. The gene products of adhE1-ctfAB catalyze the formation of acetoacetate and ethanol/butanol with acid re-assimilation in solventoge...
The Drosophila proteins, Trp and Trpl, are suggested to be cation channels responsible for depolarization of the receptor potential associated with stimulation of insect photoreceptor cells by light. Consistent with this hypothesis, we recently showed that recombinant Trpl forms Ca(2+)- and Ba(2+)-permeable non-selective cation channels when expressed in Sf9 cells using the baculovirus expressi...
