Quantifying the airflow field in building room or vehicle cabin indoor space is crucial for creating a thermal comfortable and healthy indoor environment. Airflow field measurement can provide quantitative information of indoor air distribution and local air velocity around occupants or passengers, which has strong relationship with the ventilation effectiveness, the pollutant transportation an...

We describe a novel stereocamera for particle image velocimetry (PIV) applications that incorporates the Scheimpflug condition that the object plane, lens plane, and image plane must be collinear. We examined the governing equations for this system using a computer-based sensitivity analysis to predict the accuracy of the in-plane and out-of-plane measurement. We evaluated the performance of th...

Parainfluenza virus (PIV) can cause significant morbidity after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT). We report the first use of inhaled DAS181 for PIV in an allogeneic SCT recipient. Symptoms, oxygenation, and pulmonary function tests improved. Nasopharyngeal samples showed a reduction in viral load. DAS181 should be systematically evaluated for severe PIV infection.

The incidence of respiratory virus infection after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) has probably been underestimated with conventional testing methods in symptomatic patients. This prospective study assessed viral infection episodes by testing weekly respiratory samples collected from HCT recipients, with and without symptoms reported by questionnaire, for 100 days after HCT. Samples we...

Over a 20-year period in a population of otherwise healthy children, respiratory viruses have been cultured from nasal wash specimens from each child with a clinically significant respiratory illness. Since efforts are underway to develop vaccines for prevention of illness due to parainfluenza virus (PIV) type 3, the epidemiologic characteristics of PIVs were reviewed, and the population size n...

A protocol for quantitative performance evaluation of PIV systems using the VSJ Standard Images [1] has been developed. This protocol includes programs (with C source code) to perform the quantitative performance measure and a standard way to display the results in order to permit easy system performance evaluation and comparison. There are actually three distinct protocols, dedicated respectiv...

INTRODUCTION Over 70% of all hospital admissions have a peripheral intravenous device (PIV) inserted; however, the failure rate of PIVs is unacceptably high, with up to 69% of these devices failing before treatment is complete. Failure can be due to dislodgement, phlebitis, occlusion/infiltration and/or infection. This results in interrupted medical therapy; painful phlebitis and reinsertions; ...

PURPOSE Central venous catheters continue to be a popular means of maintaining vascular access in surgical intensive care units despite well-described complications. With edema, obesity, and difficult to visualize veins potentially affecting the surgically ill, inability to obtain peripheral intravenous (PIV) access may hinder the clinician's ability to avoid the use of central lines. With ultr...

embryogenic callus initiation from anther and whole flower explants in four grapevine cultivars including flame seedless, shahroodi, perlette and red sultanina cultured on piv and harst nutrient media was studied. results showed that whole flower explants of ‘flame seedless’ cultured on piv medium had the most potential for callus production. later callus were transferred onto ges1ca medium for...

OBJECTIVE To investigate if ductus venosus (DV) pulsatility index for veins (PIV) and a-wave measurements can increase the accuracy of first-trimester Down syndrome screening in a high-risk population. METHODS The database of our fetal medicine unit was searched for all cases at increased first-trimester Down syndrome risk. Multivariable logistic regression was used to construct a prediction ...
