A case of an intraorbital wooden foreign body mimicking air on standard CT window setting and on MR is presented. Its higher attenuation with higher CT window setting as well as its elongated and well-delineated shape on both CT and MR helped to distinguish it from air.
Foreign bodies in maxillary sinuses are unusual clinical conditions, and they can cause chronic sinusitis by mucosal irritation. Most cases of foreign bodies in maxillary sinus are related to iatrogenic dental manipulation and only a few cases with non-dental origin are reported. Oroantral fistulas secondary to dental procedures are the most common way of insertion. Treatment is surgical remova...
Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of reconstructed computed tomography (CT) images using OsiriX software in detecting wooden and bamboo foreign bodies. Methods Four sizes of wet and dry wooden and bamboo foreign bodies were selected to be analyzed. Those in the air and in the head of edible swine were scanned with a multidetector row CT scanner. The images were ev...
Despite the technical advances in radiological imaging modalities that have occurred in recent years in detecting foreign bodies like wood and plastics, they are not very often relied upon. Five of the six cases reported below seen over a period of 6 months, had a delayed presentation and ultrasound was found to be very useful in detecting and planning the treatment. The author strongly recomme...
We report herein a case in which symptoms appeared eight years after the apparent trauma, which had been forgotten. Surgery yielded a wooden foreign body in the forearm. A 10-year-old boy presented with a six-week history of pain followed by swelling in his left forearm occurring after a trivial blunt trauma, with occasional bouts of fever. There was an oval swelling (7 cm x 3 cm) on the poster...
BACKGROUND Penetrating injuries to the hand can compromise important anatomic structures, and persisting foreign objects may become a source of infection. Foreign body intrusions into the hand are among the most common injuries to the upper extremity seen in the Emergency Department. Radiolucent organic objects, as well as a few higher density inorganic materials such as plastic, present a diag...
CASE A 64-year-old woman presented to the emergency department after falling when she tripped on a rock while doing yard work. Physical examination revealed an open deformity of the left forearm (Figure 1). Radial pulse was palpable, sensation was intact, and she had normal range of motion of the fingers. While awaiting radiographs, bedside ultrasound was performed (Video). Ultrasound revealed ...
