Previously, 40% food restriction of male Siberian hamsters over 21 days in short-day (SD) photoperiod induced characteristic changes in expression of hypothalamic arcuate nucleus energy balance genes; mRNAs for neuropeptide Y, agouti-related peptide, and leptin receptor were upregulated, and those of proopiomelanocortin and cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript were depressed. The prese...

Epidemiological studies have shown an association between short or disrupted sleep and an increased risk to develop obesity. In animal studies, however, sleep restriction leads to an attenuation of weight gain that cannot be explained by changes in energy intake. In the present study, we assessed whether the attenuated weight gain under conditions of restricted sleep is a consequence of an over...

This review will examine topical issues in weight loss and weight maintenance in people with and without diabetes. A high protein, low glycemic index diet would appear to be best for 12-mo weight maintenance in people without type 2 diabetes. This dietary pattern is currently being explored in a large prevention of diabetes intervention. Intermittent energy restriction is useful but no better t...

OBJECTIVES To determine the rate of extrauterine growth restriction in very low birth weight infants and to evaluate the influence of perinatal variables, clinical practices, and neonatal morbidities on this outcome. METHODS A longitudinal study was performed in four neonatal units in the city of Rio de Janeiro. 570 very low birth weight infants were analyzed. The study included perinatal var...

BACKGROUND The ability to identify obese subjects who will lose weight in response to energy restriction is an important strategy in obesity treatment. OBJECTIVE We aimed to identify obese subjects who would lose weight and maintain weight loss through 6 wk of energy restriction and 6 wk of weight maintenance. DESIGN Fifty obese or overweight subjects underwent a 6-wk energy-restricted, hig...

Among 15 strains of methanogens, one plasmid, pMP1, was identified in the new coccoid isolate PL-12/M. It could not be detected in the cleared lysate, but it was detected in the viscous pellet. The plasmid had a molecular weight of ca. 4.6 x 10(6). A restriction enzyme cleavage map of the cloned plasmid was derived.

In rats, maternal protein restriction reduces nephron endowment and often leads to adult hypertension. Sex differences in these responses have been identified. The molecular and genetic bases of these phenomena can best be identified in a mouse model, but effects of maternal protein restriction on kidney development have not been examined in mice. Therefore, we determined how combined prenatal ...
