We previously reported that expression of the breast cancer susceptibility gene BRCA1 strongly inhibits the transcriptional activity of the estrogen receptor (ER-alpha) in human breast and prostate cancer cell lines but only weakly inhibits ER-alpha activity in cervical cancer cells (S. Fan et al., Science (Wash. DC), 284: 1354-1356, 1999). We now report that the ability of BRCA1 to repress ER-...
BACKGROUND To identify and estimate the prevalence of mediastinal cysts lined by the epithelium expressing steroid receptors. METHODS We retrieved 19 mediastinal cysts from our pathology files from 1996 to 2004, and examined estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) expressions in the cysts. RESULTS Three paravertebral cysts, all in women, one bronchogenic cyst in a woman, nine ...
In this issue of the Journal, Gomez-Fernandez et al 1 report their experience with estrogen receptor (ER) immu-nohistochemical expression in 278 patients with recurrent and/or metastatic breast cancer. By using ER antibody 1D5, they found that 9 of 159 previously positive cases (5.7%) did not express ER in their metastatic or recurrent sites. In addition , of 119 initially ER– primary breast ca...
Myocardial blood flow is spatially heterogeneous, reflecting nonuniform oxygen supply. Also, myocardial oxidative metabolism is spatially heterogeneous. The effects of acute ischemia and reperfusion on the relationship between local myocardial blood flow (LMF) and oxidative metabolism are still unknown. LMF was measured in isolated, blood-perfused rabbit hearts using colored microspheres and ox...
In 2001, S. Bulman-Fleming et al. initiated the study of three flatness properties (weakly kernel flat, principally weakly kernel flat, translation kernel flat) of right acts $A_{S}$ over a monoid $S$ that can be described by means of when the functor $A_{S} otimes -$ preserves pullbacks. In this paper, we extend these results to $S$-posets and present equivalent descriptions of weakly kernel p...
Let $R$ be a commutative ring. The purpose of this article is to introduce a new class of ideals of R called weakly irreducible ideals. This class could be a generalization of the families quasi-primary ideals and strongly irreducible ideals. The relationships between the notions primary, quasi-primary, weakly irreducible, strongly irreducible and irreducible ideals, in different rings, has bee...
In this paper we introduce the notion of $varphi$-commutativity for a Banach algebra $A$, where $varphi$ is a continuous homomorphism on $A$ and study the concept of $varphi$-weak amenability for $varphi$-commutative Banach algebras. We give an example to show that the class of $varphi$-weakly amenable Banach algebras is larger than that of weakly amenable commutative Banach algebras. We charac...
For a bounded linear operator on Hilbert space we define a sequence of the so-called weakly extremal vectors. We study the properties of weakly extremal vectors and show that the orthogonality equation is valid for weakly extremal vectors. Also we show that any quasinilpotent operator $T$ has an hypernoncyclic vector, and so $T$ has a nontrivial hyperinvariant subspace.
For a Banach algebra $A$, $A''$ is $(-1)$-Weakly amenable if $A'$ is a Banach $A''$-bimodule and $H^1(A'',A')={0}$. In this paper, among other things, we study the relationships between the $(-1)$-Weakly amenability of $A''$ and the weak amenability of $A''$ or $A$. Moreover, we show that the second dual of every $C^ast$-algebra is $(-1)$-Weakly amenable.
BACKGROUND Growth factors can enhance the malignant potential of tumor cells. To examine the relationship between growth factors and tumor progression, we previously established a weakly malignant cell line, ER-1. We found that a 24-hour exposure of ER-1 cells to epidermal growth factor (EGF) induced malignant properties (tumor progression) that were reversible but that, after a 1-month exposur...
