The distribution of glycerophospholipid-cholesterol acyltransferase in selected bacterial species was examined. Enzyme activity was demonstrated in cell-free growth media from all members of the family Vibrionaceae which were tested except Plesiomonas shigelloides. In each case, enzyme was produced in exponential to early stationary phase and was excluded from Sepharose 6B, indicating a complex...

Microbial taxonomy is essential in all areas of microbial science. The 16S rRNA gene sequence is one of the main phylogenetic species markers; however, it does not provide discrimination in the family Vibrionaceae, where other molecular techniques allow better interspecies resolution. Although multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) has been used successfully in the identification of Vibrio species...

materials and methods from 2004 to 2005, plants were collected from various ecological niches and the roots were used to isolate v. cholera. standard bacteriological, biochemical and serological tests were used for its typification. results in five out of the nine ecological niches explored, we collected either l. minor or e. crassipens, as these specimens cohabited only in two niches. v. chole...

To examine the hypothesis that the ancestral role of the toxR gene in the family Vibrionaceae is control of the expression of outer membrane protein (OMP)-encoding genes for adaptation to environmental change, we investigated the role of the toxR gene in Vibrio anguillarum, an important fish pathogen. The toxR gene of V. angullarum (Va-toxR) was cloned from strain PT-87050 isolated from disease...

Members of the Vibrionaceae family are often associated with chitin-containing organisms, and they are thought to play a major role in chitin degradation. The purpose of the present study was to determine how chitin affects the transcriptome and metabolome of two bioactive Vibrionaceae strains, Vibrio coralliilyticus and Photobacterium galatheae. We focused on chitin degradation genes and secon...

Here, the draft genome sequences of two Vibrionaceae, Vibrio ponticus C121 and Photobacterium aphoticum C119, which were isolated from the coral reef vicinity in Okinawa, Japan, are reported. The genome provides further insight into the genomic plasticity, biocomplexity, and ecophysiology, including pathogenicity and evolution, of these genera.
