Proteus mirabilis, a common agent of nosocomially acquired and catheter-associated urinary tract infection, is the most frequent cause of infection-induced bladder and kidney stones. Urease-catalyzed urea hydrolysis initiates stone formation in urine and can be inhibited by acetohydroxamic acid and other structural analogs of urea. Since P. mirabilis urease is inducible with urea, there has bee...
BACKGROUND Discovery of potent inhibitors of urease (jack bean) enzyme is the first step in the development of drugs against diseases caused by ureolytic enzyme. RESULTS Thirty-two derivatives of barbituric acid as zwitterionic adducts of diethyl ammonium salts were synthesized. All synthesized compounds (4a-z and 5a-s) were screened for their in vitro inhibition potential against urease enzy...
infection with helicobacter pyloriis the most common cause of stomach and duodenal ulcers. about more than 80 % of people are infected with h. pylori in developing countries. h. pyloriuses urease enzyme product “ammonia” in order to neutralize and protect itself from the stomach acidic condition and urease enzyme activity has been shown to be essential to the colonization of h. pylori. inhibito...
In order to explore novel urease inhibitors, three new mononuclear complexes of Cu(II) and Zn(II) with Schiff base 2-{[2-(2-hydroxyethylamino)ethylimino]methyl}-4-nitrophenol have been prepared and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Among the three complexes, two Cu(II) complexes show strong urease inhibitory activities with the IC(50) values being much lower than that of the ...

Crops are usually known to have low N use efficiency, recovering only 30-35% of the N supplied (Constable and Rochester, 1988; Daberkow et al., 2000). Different practices have been recommended to increase crop N-use efficiency and much attention has been focused on the use of urease and/or nitrification inhibitors to decrease losses of N by volatilization and leaching. Cotton (Gossypium hirsutu...
In order to seek a urease inhibitor more potent than hydroxyurea (1), its alkyl- or phenyl-substituted derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their effect on the jack bean urease. Of 16 compounds tested, m-methyl- (10) and m-methoxy-phenyl substituted hydroxyurea (13) showed the most potent inhibitory activities against the enzyme.
In this paper, we evaluated the anti-Helicobacter pylori activity and the possible inhibitory effect on its associated urease by Palmatine (Pal) from Coptis chinensis, and explored the potential underlying mechanism. Results indicated that Pal exerted inhibitory effect on four tested H. pylori strains (ATCC 43504, NCTC 26695, SS1 and ICDC 111001) by the agar dilution test with minimum inhibitor...
