Acute otitis media occurs mostly after upper respiratory tract infection; the causative bacteria are those colonized in the nasopharynx. We studied 709 episodes of upper respiratory tract infection and found that children with no bacteria in the nasopharynx were at low risk for acute otitis media, whereas children with 3 pathogenic bacteria were at the greatest risk.
Background and purpose: Infection is still 30% of deaths in the elderly. The increase risk of infection in this age group is probably due to the physiological changes of the aging process. The aim of this study was done to determine the infection leading to admission in elderly and non-elderly groups in a referral teaching hospital in the Southwest of Iran. Material & methods: This cross-secti...
Viral respiratory tract infections are the most common illnesses affecting children. The reported incidence of upper respiratory infection is 24% for all children less than 5 years of age. Several studies have attempted to standardize upper respiratory infection symptoms in an effort to distinguish patients with upper respiratory tract infections. In general, most clinical studies require the p...
In 2012, a novel coronavirus associated with severe respiratory disease in humans emerged in the Middle East. Epidemiologic investigations identified dromedary camels as the likely source of zoonotic transmission of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV). Here we provide experimental support for camels as a reservoir for MERS-CoV. We inoculated 3 adult camels with a human isola...
About two million people per year in the U.S. have acne severe enough to require treatment with antibiotics. Treatment frequently lasts for more than six months, prompting concerns about antibiotic resistance and other possible consequences of long-term antibiotic use, such as increased susceptibility to infections. This Issue Brief summarizes a large study that evaluates the risk for upper res...
Background: Streptococcus pneumoniae is a common cause of respiratory infection. Pneumococcal upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) in children is seldom bacteremic. Determination the prevalence of S.pneumoniae infections in children with URTI using rapid urinary antigen test (BINAX now) and titration of serum pneumolysin antibody (added to conventional culture) was the object of this study....
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of bovine colostrum in preventing recurrent episodes of upper respiratory tract infections and diarrhoea in children METHODS 605 children (1-8 yrs) having recurrent episodes of upper respiratory tract infections or diarrhea received Bovine Colostrum (Pedimune) for 12 weeks. Total no of episodes of recurrent infections, hospitalization rate, ...
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has emerged since its isolation from infected children in 1957 as an important respiratory pathogen (Falsey et al, 2005; Hall et al, 2009; Nair et al, 2010; Ruuskanen et al, 2011). Generally, infection is restricted to the upper respiratory tract and not associated with long-term pathology, but progression to a more severe lower respiratory tract infection is f...
background: considering that there was not any regional survey in isfahan, iran regarding the epidemiology of acute respiratory tract infections (arti) in different age groups of general population, the aim of this study was to determine the epidemiologic feature of artis in isfahan using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (pcr) method. materials and methods: in this cross-sectional study,pati...
