A high performance, versatile, and reliable underwater communications capability is of strategic importance to the U.S. Navy. Operational scenarios involving the use, monitoring, and coordination of multiple undersea assets, both manned and unmanned and mobile and fixed, are significantly enhanced by the ability to communicate quickly, reliably, in a wide range of environmental conditions, and ...

A flexible solver for the Helmholtz equation is presented. The implementation of the solver is done in an object-oriented style, allowing for easy adaptation to different application problems. The solution methods that are employed are fast compared with standard solution techniques. The viability of the solver is demonstrated for realistic problems in underwater acoustics.

This work deals with the derivation of a novel transparent boundary condition (TBC) for the coupling of the standard “parabolic” equation (SPE) in underwater acoustics (assuming cylindrical symmetry) with an elastic parabolic equation (EPE) for modelling the sea bottom extending hereby the existing TBCs for a fluid model of the seabed.

Acoustic rain gauges have long been espoused as a possible means of monitoring wind and rainfall in regions far from land-based measurements. The rapid provision of data from such systems could contribute to weather forecasting. This paper provides an overview of a recent equipment trial off Galway, during which wind speeds in excess of 30m s -1 were encountered. The deployment also tested the ...

Marine robots communicating wirelessly is an increasingly attractive means for observing and monitoring in the ocean, but acoustic communication remains a major impediment to real-time control. In this paper we address through experiments the capability of acoustics to sustain highly dynamic, multi-agent missions, in particular range-only pursuit in a challenging shallow-water environment. We p...
