BACKGROUND Serum response factor (SRF) is crucial for gastric ulcer healing process. The study determined if gastric ulcer tissues up-regulate SRF and if such up-regulation correlated with co-morbidities and the risk of recurrent bleeding. METHODS Ulcer and non-ulcer tissues were obtained from 142 patients with active gastric ulcers for SRF expression assessed by immunohistochemistry. Based o...

This study was aimed to investigate the association of restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) for pepsinogen genes with peptic ulcer disease. Eighty unrelated controls, 61 patients with gastric ulcer, and 57 patients with duodenal ulcer were studied. No genetic polymorphisms for pepsinogen A were detected by EcoRI digestion in Japanese subjects but a 100 base pairs insertion-deletion...

Although the role of Helicobacter pylori infection on noncomplicated peptic ulcer disease has been definitively established, the precise relationship between the organism and complicated ulcer has hardly been studied. The mean prevalence of H. pylori infection in patients with perforated peptic ulcer is of only about 65-70%, which contrasts with the almost 90-100% figure reported in noncomplica...

BACKGROUND Peptic ulcer etiology has been changing because of H. pylori decline. OBJECTIVES To estimate peptic ulcer prevalence in 10 years-interval and compare the association with H. pylori and use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Methods Records assessment in two periods: A (1997-2000) and B (2007-2010), searching for peptic ulcer, H. pylori infection and non-steroidal anti-inflam...

The pronounced geographical and temporal variations in gastric and duodenal ulcer suggest that important environmental factors must play a part in their aetiology. To determine the nature of possible factors, the Registrar General's decennial supplement and the vital statistics special reports of the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare on occupational mortality were analy...

Pressure ulcer trials often use development of category≥2 pressure ulcers as an endpoint [1]. Research nurses regularly assess patient’s skin to capture pressure ulcer development, however missed assessments may lead to missed pressure ulcers and capturing data from routine care may be an alternative. Pressure ulcer monitoring systems have been introduced in the English NHS including the Safety...

“The most important undertaking in science is the establishment of experimental methods”—Ivan P. Pavlov (1849— 1936). Pavlov’s statement is readily applicable to ulcer research, i.e., establishing an experimental ulcer model that resembles human ulcers is of utmost importance. Nonetheless, although easily stated, developing an experimental method can prove difficult, especially when such a meth...
