Neurogranin (Ng) is a brain-specific postsynaptic calmodulin-binding protein involved in synaptic activity-dependent plasticity. In the adult olfactory bulb (OB), Ng is expressed by a large population of GABAergic interneurons in the granule cell layer. We show here that, during postnatal development, Ng is also expressed by OB neurons in the superficial external plexiform layer (sEPL) and glom...
Great rivers were generally looked at as the geographical barrier to gene flow for many taxonomic groups. The Yangtze River is the third largest river in the world, and flows across South China and into the East China Sea. Up until now, few studies have been carried out to evaluate its effect as a geographical barrier. In this study, we attempted to determine the barrier effect of the Yangtze R...
The one-dimensional current-source density method was used to analyze laminar field potential profiles evoked in rat olfactory bulb slices by stimulation in the olfactory nerve (ON) layer or mitral cell layer (MCL) and to identify the field potential generators and the characteristics of synaptic activity in this network. Single pulses to the ON evoked a prolonged (>/=400 ms) sink (S1ON) in the...
Tufted angioma (TA) is a benign vascular tumor with endothelial origin. It is extremely rare in oral mucosa; only seven cases have been reported in the literature so far. Here, we describe two cases of tufted angioma observed in children and we also present a review of the literature about this pathology, concerning the differential diagnosis and management of this lesion in children.
Araucana chickens are known for their rounded, tailless rumps and tufted ears. Inheritance studies have shown that the rumpless (Rp) and ear-tufted (Et) loci each act in an autosomal dominant fashion, segregate independently, and are associated with an increased rate of embryonic mortality. To find genomic regions associated with Rp and Et, we generated genome-wide SNP profiles for a diverse po...
The neurons of the glomerular layer of the rat olfactory bulb have been studied using Nissl staining and Golgi-Kopsch impregnation in light microscopy to define the size, shape and morphological features of individual cell somata, dendrites and axons; these have been correlated with electron-microscopic material in which fine-structural characteristics were also noted for each cell type, partic...
The cost of drying carpet which is done toward the end of the manufacturing process, is quite high. The carpet industry has been using convection drying for many years. Little attention has been given to quantifying the effect of microwave power during the drying of carpet. An experimental system was developed whereby air was introduced into the cavity of a domestic microwave oven. The resu...
The acquired tufted angioma is a unique, dusky red, vascular proliferation previously reported in the skin, usually developing in childhood or in young adults, which exhibits a distinctive microscopic appearance. Clinically, the condition enlarges at a variable rate, becomes stable and may regress spontaneously. A small, long-standing, vascular lesion of the mucosa of the lower lip, exhibiting ...
