Trichomes are epidermal hairs found on the aerial surfaces of nearly all plants and in different species. They grow in different shapes and act as protectors against insects, microbes and herbivores. Trichomes vary in their morphology, distribution pattern on a given organ and in their histochemical images. Different trichome types were observed in the aerial parts of the two species of broomra...

Electron transfer activity in intact trichomes of Spirulina platensis (Nordst.) Geitl. can be observed with either CO(2) or methylviologen as the Hill acceptor. Ferricyanide cannot penetrate the intact trichomes, but photoreduction of this oxidant can be observed when mediated by lipophilic oxidants such as p-phenylenediamine or 2,5-dimethyl-p-benzoquinone. The insensitivity of these reactions ...

Glucosinolates (GS) are important plant secondary metabolites in plant resistance to herbivores, bacteria, and fungi, which have been shown to be accumulating in different organs and tissue types at varying concentrations. There are more than 200 GS species found in order Brassicales and presence of these compounds is well documented on organ-specific but not on cell-specific level. We used UPL...

Abstract Through exploring potential analogies between cotton seed trichomes (or cotton fiber) and arabidopsis shoot trichomes we discovered that CesAs from either the primary or secondary wall phylogenetic clades can support secondary wall thickening. CesA genes that typically support primary wall synthesis, AtCesA1,2,3,5, and 6, underpin expansion and secondary wall thickening of arabidopsis ...

Arabidopsis trichomes are single-celled epidermal hairs that serve as a useful model for the study of plant cell differentiation. An examination of the distribution of trichomes early in their development revealed that developing trichomes occur adjacent to another trichome much less frequently than would be expected by chance. Clonal analysis of epidermal cell lineages ruled out a role for cel...

Inducible chemical defenses of plants have received much attention in the last three decades, and these defenses often involve trichomes. It is known that some plant secondary metabolites may accumulate in trichomes which can protect plants from damage by herbivores. However, studies on plant trichomes are largely limited to some major vegetable or cash crops and model species with large glandu...

BACKGROUND Perovskia abrotanoides Karel. is a medicinal plant used in Iranian folk medicine as a pain killer. Forty-one components have been identified in P. abrotanoides samples collected from Baluchistan Province, and 29 components have been recognized in samples collected from Khorasan Province. The leaves of P. abrotanoides have glandular trichomes (capitates and peltate) on both sides of t...

Plant morphological changes mediated by growth conditions are linked to changes in host preference of herbivores. Understanding how these morphological changes inßuence herbivore feeding is critical in the interpretationof results of host evaluationof candidateweedbiocontrol agents in quarantine and improvement of the evaluation system. We determined the effect of plant growth conditions on lea...

As often reminded to the readers in articles or reviews which deal with plant adaptation to their environment, higher plants are sessile organisms, a life habit which does not allow them to escape danger or to move to avoid adverse conditions. This environmental pressure has led to a myriad of adaptations, which are reflected in the vast diversity of plant habitats, morphologies, life cycles an...
