Postintubation Tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is a rare complication. Acquired TEF most commonly occurred following prolonged mechanical ventilation with an endotracheal or tracheostomy tube, cuff-related tracheal injury, post-intubation injury. We present a case of both tracheomegaly and tracheosephagial fistula following mechanical ventilation for 15 days, in the light of the literature.
Abstract Background Acquired tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is a rare presentation in pediatric lymphoma patients. Most heal spontaneously following chemotherapy/radiotherapy without requiring surgery. Case A 10-year-old child presented with persistent after completion of chemotherapy for Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The mid-tracheal location the had significant implications terms airway management. Se...
BACKGROUND Tracheal necrosis is a severe complication of total pharyngolaryngectomy (TPL). The purpose of this retrospective study was to identify risk factors for tracheal necrosis after TPL. METHODS We performed a retrospective chart review of 177 patients who had undergone TPL. The preoperative, operative, and postoperative variables were examined, and possible risk factors for tracheal ne...
A 52-year-old woman with tracheal lesions underwent tracheal resection and carina reconstruction directly because histopathologic diagnosis was not obtained before surgery. Postoperative pathological analysis confirmed a diagnosis of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. Subsequently, she suffered serious complications of tracheal stenosis, bronchial stenosis, and tracheoesophageal...
Tracheal penetration of esophageal self-expanding metallic stents (SEMS) with/without tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) formation is a rare occurrence. We report the case of a 66-year-old female patient with advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma who had undergone palliative esophageal stenting on three occasions for recurrent esophageal stent obstruction. On evaluation of symptoms of breath...
Objective: The use of a T-tube to manage complex laryngotracheal lesions, such as tracheal stenosis, tracheomalacia and tracheal injury, has previously been reported by other surgeons in the past. However, further validation of clinical details, including operative management and postoperative care, is needed. Methods: From January 1991 to May 2000, 53 patients, including 24 with post-tracheost...
Chronic tracheoesophageal fistula is a rare disease presenting a therapeutic challenge. Unlike the case with most digestive fistulas, drainage with a pigtail stent [1] is not possible. We present here the case of a 47-yearold man referred for a chronic 2-mm tracheoesophageal fistula (23 cm from mouth) of unknown cause. His past history revealed several pulmonary infections since childhood. Seve...
Esophageal atresia (EA) occurs when the upper part of the esophagus does not connect with the lower part of esophagus and stomach. Tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is an abnormal connection between the upper part of the esophagus and the trachea. Treatment for esophageal atresia has advanced over several decades due to improvements in surgical techniques and neonatal intensive care. The aim is t...
