Human toxocariasis is generally a benign, self-curing disease, and neurologic involvement is quite exceptional. In this study, we report a case of toxocariasis caused by ingestion of an unusual transport host, namely live slugs. The clinical picture comprised eosinophilic lung involvement with severe neurologic disorders in relation to vasculitis as well as retinal detachment.
Recently reports on toxocariasis are increasing by serodiagnosis in Korea. A previously healthy 17-yr-old boy complained of headache, fever, dyspnea, and anorexia. He showed symptoms and signs of eosinophilic meningitis with involvement of the lungs and liver. Specific IgG antibody to Toxocara canis larval antigen was positive in serum and cerebrospinal fluid by ELISA. He took raw ostrich liver...
Toxocariasis has long been considered a parasitic disease affecting pet owners and children who often play in sandboxes at public parks. Recent cases of this animal-borne infection, however, indicate that its clinical manifestations and etiologies are changing. In this article, we will describe the critical characteristic features of toxocariasis alongside the contributions of Japanese research...
This case-control study was carried out to investigate whether eosinophilia is a common finding in parasitic diseases and to determine the prevalence of the parasitic diseases in definitive groups. Toxocariasis and fasciolosis were investigated in patients with eosinophilia, patients with non-eosinophilia, and healthy controls. All cases were analyzed for antibodies against Toxocara canis and F...
BACKGROUND Toxocariasis is a common disease around the world. Our objective was to determine Toxocara seroprevalence in humans in the city of Isparta, Southwest Turkey, in respect of some determinants such as age, socio-economic level, residence in city center or rural area etc. METHODS Five hundred and thirty four individual participants from Isparta center and 85 from Asagi Gokdere village ...
Despite being one of the most common zoonotic infections worldwide, human toxocariasis has been one of the neglected tropical diseases. Although most human infections are asymptomatic, two main syndromes of human toxocariasis are classically recognized: systemic toxocariasis, which encompasses diseases in major organs; and ocular toxocariasis (OT), disease in the eye or optic nerve, caused by t...
There have been numerous reports on the relationship between eosinophilia and toxocariasis. The present study investigated seropositive rates of toxocariasis among healthy people with or without eosinophilia in urban and rural areas, and assessed risk factors for positive antibody test. A total of 610 healthy people, who visited health check-up (Medicheck®, Korea Association of Health Promotion...
Human toxocariasis is due to the larval stages of the Ascarids Toxocara canis (T. canis) and probably Toxocara catis, common roundworm of dogs and cats respectively. Among the helminthiasis, toxocariasis is one of the most prevalent worldwide, especially in settings where man-soil-dog relationship is particularly close. Even if it tends to be more prevalent in tropical settings, seroprevalence ...
BACKGROUND Human toxocariasis is primarily a soil-transmitted zoonosis, so children with geophagia are at an increased risk of toxocariasis, especially those living in homes with puppies that have not been dewormed. CASE REPORT A 17-months-old female presented to our department with fever, abdominal distention and marked eosinophilia. Iron deficiency anemia, marked leukocytosis (79,000 cells/...
