Optical intersubband transitions (ISTs) for both in-plane polarization (TE) and normalto-plane polarization (TM) in p-type Si1-xGex/Si multiple quantum wells (MQWs) are investigated using 14-band k⋅p model combined with the envelope-function Fourier expansion method. The results show that the amplitudes of different intersubband transitions for TE and TM polarizations, and the overall absorptio...

We experimentally realize a compact wideband polarization splitter and rotator (PSR) with CMOS compatibility. The fabricated PSR is then tested by utilizing a fabrication-tolerant TE-pass on-chip polarizer we propose to practically solve the issue of accurately aligning the polarizations in fiber and modes on chip. Both of these polarization handling devices take the advantage of bend structure...

We present ultrawide flat-band reflectors enabled with multilevel resonant leaky-mode structures. The reflectors are designed using particle swarm optimization. We show that three-level silicon-on-insulator structures provide bandwidths of approximately 840 nm for TE polarization and approximately 835 nm for TM polarization, across which reflectance is greater than 99% and 97.5%, respectively. ...

Typically the grating problem is formulated for TE and TM polarizations by using, respectively, the electric and magnetic fields aligned with the grating wall and perpendicular to the plane of incidence, and this leads to a one-field-component problem. For some grating profiles such as metallic gratings with a triangular profile, the prediction of TM polarization by using a standard finite-elem...

The fundamental quasi-TE and quasi-TM modes of a sub-wavelength strip silicon waveguide are not purely TE or TM as the plane waves in free space. We investigate theoretically and experimentally the far-field polarization compositions of the two waveguide modes after they emanate from the waveguide facet. The measured polarization extinction ratios (PERs) of 31 dB for the quasi-TM mode and 26 dB...

We describe a new method of sensing the linear polarization of light using resonant cavity enhanced (RCE) photodetectors. The RCE detectors are constructed by integrating a thin absorption region into an asymmetric Fabry-Perot cavity. The top re ector is formed by the semiconductor air interface, while the bottom mirror is a Distributed Bragg Re ector (DBR). Quantum e ciency of these RCE device...

The performance of optical components can have significant dependence on polarization, as with the difference between TE and TM polarization in planar devices like AWG and SOA. Determination of the optical properties for the principal states of polarization can be needed, for instance to determine the polarization dependent wavelength of a bandpass filter. It can be complicated to adjust instru...

The magnetoelectric effect is a fundamental physical phenomenon that synergizes electric and magnetic degrees of freedom to generate distinct material responses like electrically tuned magnetism, which serves as key foundation the emerging field spintronics. Here, we show by first-principles studies ferroelectric (FE) polarization an In2Se3 monolayer can modulate magnetism adjacent transition-m...

Yan Li (SID Student Member) Thomas X. Wu (SID Member) Shin-Tson Wu (SID Fellow) Abstract — A high-performance reflective polarization converter which could be used in a backlight recycling system for liquid-crystal-display (LCD) devices is proposed. The device consists of a twistednematic (TN) liquid-crystal film, a uniaxial A-plate, and a reflector. The configuration parameters, such as thickn...
