A model is proposed for two observed current–voltage (I – V) patterns in a recent experiment with a scanning tunneling microscope tip and a carbon nanotube @Collins et al., Science 278, 100 ~1997!#. We claim that there are two mechanical contact modes for a tip ~metal!–nanotube ~semiconductor! junction ~1! with or ~2! without a tiny vacuum gap ~0.1–0.2 nm!. With the tip grounded, the tunneling ...

The dynamics of optically generated electron-hole pairs is investigated in a disordered semiconductor nanowire. The particle pairs are generated by short laser pulses and their dynamics is followed using the Heisenberg equation of motion. Is is shown that Coulomb–correlation acts against localization in the case of the two–interacting particles (TIP) problem. Furthermore, currents are generated...

We show that the band structure of a carbon nanotube (NT) can be dramatically altered by mechanical strain. We employ an atomic force microscope tip to simultaneously vary the NT strain and to electrostatically gate the tube. We show that strain can open a band gap in a metallic NT and modify the band gap in a semiconducting NT. Theoretical work predicts that band gap changes can range between ...

We present a novel plasmonic antenna structure, a split-wedge antenna, created by splitting an ultrasharp metallic wedge with a nanogap perpendicular to its apex. The nanogap can tightly confine gap plasmons and boost the local optical field intensity in and around these opposing metallic wedge tips. This three-dimensional split-wedge antenna integrates the key features of nanogaps and sharp ti...

To identify additional cell fusion genes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, we performed a high-copy suppressor screen of fus2Delta. Higher dosage of three genes, BEM1, LRG1, and FUS1, partially suppressed the fus2Delta cell fusion defect. BEM1 and FUS1 were high-copy suppressors of many cell-fusion-defective mutations, whereas LRG1 suppressed only fus2Delta and rvs161Delta. Lrg1p contains a Rho-GAP ...

PURPOSE To compare the accuracy of marginal and internal adaptation of zirconia (Zr) copings fabricated on anatomic (A), semi-anatomic (SA) and non-anatomic (NA) occlusal surface preparations. MATERIALS AND METHODS 45 extracted bicuspid teeth were prepared for receiving zirconia crowns, with different occlusal preparation designs A=15, SA=15 & NA=15. The Zr copings were fabricated by using CA...

Pattern in the developing limb depends on signaling by polarizing region mesenchyme cells, which are located at the posterior margin of the bud tip. Here we address the underlying cellular mechanisms. We show in the intact bud that connexin 43 (Cx43) and Cx32 gap junctions are at higher density between distal posterior mesenchyme cells at the tip of the bud than between either distal anterior o...

The present study explains a steady-state method of measuring convective heat transfer coefficient on the casing of an axial flow turbine. The goal is to develop an accurate steadystate heat transfer method for the comparison of various casing surface and tip designs used for turbine performance improvements. The free-stream reference temperature, especially in the tip gap region of the casing ...

tip leakage loss introduces major part of losses of the rotor in axial gas turbines. therefore, the rotor blade tip has a considerable effect on rotor efficiency. to understand the flow physics of the rotor tip leakage, we solve the flow field for different tip platforms (passive flow control) and by considering coolant tip injection (active flow control). various blade tip configurations such ...

We present three-dimensional simulations of the image formation process in near-field optical microscopy. Our calculations take into account the different components of a realistic experiment: an extended metal coated tip, a subwavelength sample and its substrate. We investigate all possible detection (transmitted, reflected and collected field) and scanning (constant height, constant gap) mode...
