INTRODUCTION Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension is a disease affecting approximately 4,000 people per year in the United States. The incidence rate in Brazil, however, is unknown. The estimated survival for patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension without treatment is approximately three years. Pulmonary thromboendarterectomy for select patients is a potentially cu...

pon successful completion of this article, the pharmacist should be able to: 1. List the advantages and disadvantages of currently available anticoagulants. 2. Discuss the role of Factor Xa (FXa) in the coagulation cascade and the rationale for selected FXa inhibition as a target for drug development. 3. Discuss the pharmacology of apixaban and rivaroxaban: mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics...
Thyroid disorders are commonly associated with coagulopathy. Patients with hyperthyroidism have increased risk for developing thromboembolic accidents, which are favoured by a simultaneous presence of antiphospholipid antibodies syndrome. in this paper, we describe the case of a patient with Graves' disease, who developed strokes with antiphospholipid antibodies syndrome.
Since its discovery in 1916, heparin has been used extensively for treatment of thromboembolic disorders. Bleeding is its most well-known and frequent complication. We are describing the first case report of overt pulmonary hemorrhage in a patient who received heparin after emergent angioplasty for prevention of coronary artery rethrombosis.
Congenital factor X deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive bleeding disorder that presents with variable bleeding tendency and prolonged coagulation tests, prothrombin time, and partial thromboplastin time. Thromboembolic events have not been reported in patients with factor X deficiency yet. Herein, we report a patient with factor X deficiency who had recurrent venous thromboembolic events.
BACKGROUND Platelet hyperaggregation is known to be associated with arterial and venous thromboembolic events. The prevalence of platelet hyperaggregation in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) has not been described to date. METHODS Platelet hyperaggregation in patients with renal disease was defined by comparison of platelet aggregation patterns to non-CKD patients without thromboemb...
We present a case report of patient with previously identified cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), who was admitted due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), confirmed by polymerase chain reaction computed tomography. Examination treatment these patients presents certain difficulties the large number thromboembolic complications cau...
Our knowledge about various inherited and acquired causes of thrombophilic disorders has increased significantly during the past decade. Technology for various diagnostic tests for these rare disorders has matched the rapid advances in our understanding about the thrombophilic disorders. Inherited thrombophilic disorders predispose young patients for various venous or arterial thrombotic and th...
