Objective. We performed a systematic review of the literature to evaluate the effects of alpha lipoic acid for symptomatic peripheral neuropathy in patients with diabetes mellitus. Research design and methods. The databases MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched using the key words "lipoic acid", "thioctic acid", "diabet∗", and the MeSH-terms "thioctic acid" and "diabetes mellitus". Randomised contro...

Saccharides - a versatile class of biologically important molecules - are involved in a variety of physiological and pathological processes, but their detection and quantification is challenging. Herein, surface plasmon resonance and self-assembled monolayers on gold generated from bis-boronic acid bearing a thioctic acid moiety, whose intramolecular distance between the boronic acid moieties i...

Historically, mortality after Amanita mushroom ingestion has ranged from 50% to 90%. Prompt diagnosis is imperative, and aggressive therapeutic measures must be instituted quickly to improve the outcome. We report successful treatment of two cases of A. virosa poisoning by use of combined therapies, including thioctic acid and hemoperfusion.

In 1937, a component of potato extract, named “potato growth factor”, was discovered to be necessary for the growth of Lactobacillus (1). Subsequent work by a number of laboratories led to the isolation and purification of the active compound in 1951 (2). The compound was identified as α-lipoic acid (LA; formerly referred to as thioctic acid), an eight-carbon dithiol containing a single chiral ...

The microwave-assisted functionalization of carbon nanohorns (CNHs) via [2+1] nitrenes cycloaddition, providing well dispersible hybrid materials possessing aziridino-rings covalently grafted onto the graphitic network of CNHs, was accomplished, while condensation of hydroxy-functionalized CNHs with thioctic acid, furnishing an endocyclic disulfide bond extended from the aziridino-rings, allowe...

Nanomaterials are widely used as pseudostationary and stationary phases in electrically driven separations. The advantages of using nanomaterials are numerous including tunable sizes, multiple core compositions, flexible injection schemes, and diverse surface chemistries. Nanomaterials, however, exhibit large surface energies which induce aggregation and may yield unpredictable function in sepa...
