Recently we discussed the Renner-Teller effect in triatomic molecules [J. Chem. Phys. 125, 094102 (2006)]. In that article the main message is that the Renner-Teller phenomenon, just like the Jahn-Teller phenomenon, is a topological effect. Now we extend this study to a tetra-atomic system, namely, the C(2)H(2) (+) ion, for which topological effects are revealed when one atom surrounds the tria...

The Jahn-Teller effect in the first two excited states of the nitrate radical NO3 has yet to be experimentally elucidated. In this paper, direct evidence of strong Jahn-Teller interactions in the A state is presented from the first complete absorption spectrum of the A2E'' <-- X2A(2)' transition of NO3 in the gas phase in the region 5900-9000 cm(-1), at moderate resolution (0.15 cm(-1)). The ob...

I discuss two of Edward Teller's contributions to nuclear physics, the introduction of the Gamow-Teller operator in β decay and the formulation of the Goldhaber-Teller model for electric dipole transitions, in the context of efforts to understand the weak interaction and the nature of the neutrino.

The Gamow–Teller β decays of the neutron-deficient indium isotopes 104–107In have been investigated by using total absorption γ -ray spectrometry on mass-separated sources. The experimental Gamow–Teller strength, deduced as a function of the excitation energy in the daughter nuclei 104–107Cd, is compared to shell-model predictions.  2001 Elsevier Science B.V. We review the fundamentals of Jahn-Teller interactions and their field theoretical modelings and show that a 2+1 dimensional gauge theory where the gauge field couples to “flavored fermions” arises in a natural way from a two-band model describing the dynamical Jahn-Teller effect. The theory exhibits a second order phase transition to novel finite-temperature superconductivity.

This paper presents an immune-inspired adaptable error detection (AED) framework for Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). This framework two levels, one level is local to a single ATM, while the other is a network-wide adaptable error detection. It employs ideas from vaccination, and adaptability analogies of the immune system. For discriminating between normal and erroneous states, an immune insp...

At the outset of his comments Professor Teller expresses disquiet at what seems to him my claiming to have a rule which is capable of automatically generating the hypothesis to be adopted when given nothing but the experimental data. Such a claim would indeed be quite preposterous since everybody knows that there are no clear-cut principles for the production of hypotheses, but that these are s...
