Introduction Precise talar in vivo motion is difficult to measure due to its inaccessibility to surface based measures. Thus, most measures of talar motion have been limited to cadaver based measures, typically under static conditions. Quantitative measures of the talar bearing surfaces and their ability to mesh with the calcaneal and malleolar bearing surfaces would provide an understanding of...

Talar head fractures are rare injuries. We present a 26-year-old man with malunion of the talar head. The displaced fracture was initially neglected. The patient was treated with osteotomy and bone grafting to improve the congruity and movement of the talonavicular joint. Three months after surgery, he returned to his pre-injury activity level with no disability.

We have reviewed 42 of 52 consecutive patients at an average of 14 years after a tenodesis based on Evans' operation performed for chronic lateral instability of the ankle. Only 21 patients (50%) had satisfactory long-term functional results, and 12 patients with satisfactory early results had deteriorated after three to six years. Stress radiographs were used to measure anterior talar translat...

OBJECTIVES To report the rates of osteonecrosis and subtalar arthritis after talar neck fractures and to examine if rates have changed over time. DATA SOURCES A systematic review and meta-analysis of the English literature was performed using EMBASE, MEDLINE, CENTRAL, and Cochrane in November 2011 and updated in November 2014. STUDY SELECTION Inclusion criteria were studies examining talar ...

Open hindfoot injuries result from high-energy trauma and include soft tissue disruption, joint dislocations, with possible chondral and osseous injuries. The term “total talus dislocation”, is an uncommon open hindfoot injury associated with talar extrusion. However, a total talus dislocation without extrusion has not been reported. This case presents an open hindfoot injury with dislocations ...

When performing the Scandinavian Total Ankle Replacement (STAR), the positioning of the talar component and the selection of mobile-bearing thickness are critical. A biomechanical experiment was undertaken to establish the effects of these variables on the range of movement (ROM) of the ankle. Six cadaver ankles containing a specially-modified STAR prosthesis were subjected to ROM determination...

BACKGROUND The talus has a very complex anatomical morphology and is mainly fractured by a major force caused by a fall or a traffic accident. Therefore, a talus fracture is not common. However, many recent reports have shown that minor injuries, such as sprains and slips during sports activities, can induce a talar fracture especially in the lateral or posterior process. Still, fractures to th...

The two-portal hindfoot arthroscopy is an effective procedure enabling direct visualisation of posterior ankle pathology with low invasiveness. An important stage of the hindfoot endoscopy is localisation of the flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon to protect the neurovascular bundle which is located just medial to it.Posterior ankle impingement syndrome and FHL tenosynovitis are common causes of...

Ankle cheilectomy as surgical treatment for anterior ankle impingement has high rates of procedural success and low rates of complications when performed before the onset of significant osteoarthritis. We present 3 patients who developed insufficiency fractures of the talar neck following cheilectomy for anterior ankle impingement. Due to the high risk of avascular necrosis associated with disp...

Total talar dislocation is a rare injury, which is usually open and with associated fractures. We report two cases of open anterolateral talar extrusions following high-energy traffic accidents. Both were treated with wound debridement, joint irrigation, closed reduction and external fixation. At 12 months follow-up, both patients had pain-free motion of the ankle without any signs of avascular...
