Cascading failures in power systems propagate non-locally, making the control and mitigation of outages extremely hard. In this work, we use the emerging concept of the tree partition of transmission networks to provide a complete analytical characterization of line failure localizability in transmission systems. Our results reveal that the “bridges” of the tree partition play a crucial role in...

This document specifies how the level 3 multihoming Shim6 protocol (Shim6) detects failures between two communicating nodes. It also specifies an exploration protocol for switching to another pair of interfaces and/or addresses between the same nodes if a failure occurs and an operational pair can be found. Arkko & Van Beijnum Standards Track [Page 1] RFC 5534 Failure Detection/Exploration Prot...

Deadlocks are very serious system failures and have been observed in existing packet switching networks (PSN's). Several problems related to the design of deadlock-free PSN's are investigated here. Polynomial-time algorithms are given for some of these problems, but most of them are shown to be NP-complete or NP-hard, and therefore polynomial-time algorithms are not likely to be found.

Due to empirical failures, researchers recently have suggested that the inflationunemployment relationship associated with the natural rate of unemployment (NAIRU) should be characterized by more complex dynamics and/or highly nonlinear, switching regimes associated with contractions and expansions. This paper investigates empirically both the appropriate specification of the dynamics of the NA...

This paper investigates distributed fault restoration techniques for multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) to automatically reroute label switched paths in the event of link or router failures while maintaining quality of service (QoS) requirements. Protocols for path and partial path restoration are evaluated. A backup route selection algorithm based on optimization of equivalent bandwidth is f...

The threshold for switching mobile phone numbers between different mobile communication service providers has largely decreased since the government lifted the ban on mobile phone number portability service. Users can convert their mobile communication service from their current provider to others while maintaining their existing phone numbers. The demand for mobile communication services has b...

BACKGROUND Current guidelines for providing antiretroviral therapy (ART) in South Africa's public sector programme call for switching patients from first-line to second-line treatment upon virologic failure as indicated by two consecutive viral loads above 5000 copies/ml, but without laboratory evidence of viral resistance. We modelled the net cost of adding resistance testing for patients with...

Increasing demand of complex and data demanding Internet services has negatively affected the quality of service of data transfers in the network. Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is an architecture developed to combine the dynamic nature of IP routing protocols and the efficiency of label switching. A significant issue in nowadays networks is the support of real-time services or multimedia...

This work addresses the problem of designing a fault-tolerant control system for fluid dynamic systems modeled by highlydissipative partial differential equations (PDEs) with constrained control actuators. The proposed approach is predicated upon the idea of coordinating feedback controller synthesis and switching between multiple, spatially-distributed control actuator configurations. Using ap...

The objective of this paper is to study the M/M/R machine repair queueing system with mixed standbys. The life-time and repair time of units are assumed to be exponentially distributed. Failed units are repaired on FCFS basis. The standbys have switching failure probability q (0≤q≤1). The repair facility of the system consists of R permanent as well as r additional removable repairmen. Due to i...
