BACKGROUND The paper presents a quantification of main (hydrogen sulfide and sulfate), as well as of intermediate sulfur species (zero-valent sulfur (ZVS), thiosulfate, sulfite, thiocyanate) in the Yellowstone National Park (YNP) hydrothermal springs and pools. We combined these measurements with the measurements of quadruple sulfur isotope composition of sulfate, hydrogen sulfide and zero-vale...

The localization of sulfur-35 administered intraperitoneally as sodium sulfate to 7-day-old rats was determined by radioautography of sections of humeri and tibia-knee-femur combinations removed 24, 48, 96, 216, and 290 hours after injection of this isotope. Radioautography of sections of bone and cartilage that had been fixed in formalin indicated that the tracer isotope was present throughout...

The sulfur isotopic composition of dissolved sulfate in seawater has varied through time. Distinct variations and relatively high rates of change characterize certain time intervals. This allows for dating and correlation of sediments using sulfur isotopes. The variation in sulfur isotopes and the potential stratigraphic resolution of this isotope system is discussed and graphically displayed.

BACKGROUND We studied the annual variability of the concentration and isotopic composition of main sulfur species and sulfide oxidation intermediates in the water column of monomictic fresh-water Lake Kinneret. Sulfate concentrations in the lake are <1 mM and similar to concentrations that are proposed to have existed in the Paleoproterozoic ocean. The main goal of this research was to explore ...

We report sulfur isotope anomalies with S, the deviation from a mass-dependent fractionation line for the three-isotope system (S/S vs. S/S), ranging up to 2‰ within individual Archean sedimentary sulfides from a variety of localities. Our measurements, which are made in situ by multicollector secondary ion mass spectrometry, unequivocally corroborate prior bulk measurements of mass-independent...

Batch culture experiments were performed with 32 different sulfate-reducing prokaryotes to explore the diversity in sulfur isotope fractionation during dissimilatory sulfate reduction by pure cultures. The selected strains reflect the phylogenetic and physiologic diversity of presently known sulfate reducers and cover a broad range of natural marine and freshwater habitats. Experimental conditi...

Stable isotope analysis of human remains has been used to address long-standing debates regarding the speed and degree to which the introduction of farming transformed diet. In Europe, this debate has centered on northern and Atlantic regions with much less attention devoted to the arrival of farming across the Mediterranean. This study presents carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses of co...

23 24 Large rounded pyrite grains (>1 mm), commonly referred to as ‘buckshot’ pyrites, are a characteristic feature of 25 the auriferous conglomerates (reefs) in the Witwatersrand and Ventersdorp supergroups. Detailed petrographic 26 analyses of the reefs indicated that the vast majority of the buckshot pyrites are of reworked sedimentary origin, 27 i.e., that the pyrite originally formed in th...

The isotope record of sedimentary sulfides can help resolve the history of oxygen accumulation into the atmosphere. We measured sulfur isotopic fractionation during microbial sulfate reduction up to 88 degrees C and show how sulfate reduction rate influences the preservation of biological fractionations in sediments. The sedimentary sulfur isotope record suggests low concentrations of seawater ...
