The subthalamic nucleus and the directly adjacent substantia nigra are small and important structures in the basal ganglia. Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have shown that the subthalamic nucleus and substantia nigra are selectively involved in response inhibition, conflict processing, and adjusting global and selective response thresholds. However, imaging these nuclei is complex...

Subthalamic nucleus stimulation is emerging as an effective surgical therapy for Parkinson’s disease. It is considered to be a safe procedure with little morbidity, the most common complications being intracranial haemorrhage and hardware failure. We report on three cases of depression, one of whom attempted suicide after bilateral subthalamic nucleus stimulation. © 2002 Movement Disorder Society

Part I of The Subthalamic Nucleus (volume 198) (STN) accentuates the gap between experimental animal and human information concerning subthalamic development, cytology, topography and connections. The light and electron microscopical cytology focuses on the open nucleus concept and the neuronal types present in the STN. The cytochemistry encompasses enzymes, NO, glial fibrillary acidic protein (...

An 88-year-old woman presented with hemiballism of abrupt onset that mainly affected her left leg. Brain computed tomography revealed a hemorrhage at the right subthalamic nucleus (Picture 1). An easy Z-score imaging system analysis of single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) using Tc-ethyl cysteinate dimer revealed hyperperfusion at the right motor cortex corresponding to the leg and...

Deep brain stimulation in the subthalamic nucleus is an effective and safe surgical procedure that has been shown to reduce the motor dysfunction of patients with advanced Parkinson's disease. Bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation, however, has been associated with declines in cognitive and cognitive-motor functioning. It has been hypothesized that spread of current to nonmotor a...

The brainstem pedunculopontine nucleus has a likely, although unclear, role in gait control, and is a potential deep brain stimulation target for treating resistant gait disorders. These disorders are a major therapeutic challenge for the ageing population, especially in Parkinson's disease where gait and balance disorders can become resistant to both dopaminergic medication and subthalamic nuc...
