Of 532 strains of viridans streptococci isolated from clinical specimens, 517 were identified by using a scheme based on the work of Facklam (R. R. Facklam, J. Clin. Microbiol. 5:184-201, 1977). The strains were distributed among nine of the species described by Facklam and an additional group of physiologically homogeneous streptococci not recognized in Facklam's scheme. The method for identif...

The activity of quinupristin/dalfopristin was compared with that of other widely used antibiotics against 355 strains isolated from patients with endocarditis. MICs were determined by a standard agar dilution method. Quinupristin/dalfopristin was inhibitory at 1 mg/L for all coagulase-negative staphylococci (n = 36) and for the majority of Staphylococcus aureus strains (n = 87). The activity of...

We report a case of Streptococcus suis human disease in Ontario, Canada, caused by a serotype 2 strain genotypically similar to those commonly isolated from pigs in North America. Initially, the isolate was misidentified as a viridans group Streptococcus. Human S. suis infections may be underdiagnosed in North America.
