Acetaldehyde (ACH) associated with alcoholic beverages is Group 1 carcinogen to humans (IARC/WHO). Aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2), a major ACH eliminating enzyme, is genetically deficient in 30-50% of Eastern Asians. In alcohol drinkers, ALDH2-deficiency is a well-known risk factor for upper aerodigestive tract cancers, i.e., head and neck cancer and esophageal cancer. However, there is only a ...

A newborn infant with spontaneous oesophageal rupture associated with duodenal atresia is described. The diagnosis was established by the pattern of hydropneumothorax on the chest x-ray film and by the aspiration of gastric juice by thoracocentesis. Necropsy showed a tear, which extended from the oesophagogastric junction to the upper portion of the stomach.

Ascorbic acid, the reduced form of vitamin C, may protect against gastric cancer and is secreted by the normal stomach. Secretion is impaired in Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) associated chronic gastritis. This study examined if eradication of H pylori improves gastric juice ascorbate values. Fasting gastric juice and plasma samples were collected at endoscopy from patients participating in tri...

Anthocyanins are natural pigments that could be involved in various health effects. Red oranges are an important dietary source of anthocyanins, including cyanidin 3-glucoside (Cy 3-glc) and an acylated derivative, cyanidin 3-(6''-malonyl)-glucoside (Cy 3-malglc). The aim of this study was to evaluate the absorption and metabolism of red orange anthocyanins in rats fed an anthocyanin-enriched d...

Bifidobacterium longum was microencapsulated by extrusion technique and added in fresh milk tofu and pineapple juice. Microencapsulation of B. longum with Eleutherine americana extract, oligosaccharides extract, and commercial fructo-oligosaccharides was assessed for the bacterial survival after sequential exposure to simulated gastric and intestinal juices, and refrigeration storage. Microenca...

Rat stomach carcinomas induced by N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) are widely used as a model for differentiated-type human stomach carcinomas. Here, we analyzed expression profiles in five MNNG-induced rat stomach carcinomas by the high-density oligonucleotide microarray containing approximately 8000 probe sets. 244 and 208 genes were up- and down-regulated, respectively, by 3-fold ...

gastric juice or mineral acids }11to a proteid and another substance which gives :io proteid reaction. This contains all the iodine (about 14 %) and is known as iodo-thyrin. Very little is known about its chemistry beyond that it is not a proteid, and that it contains all the iodine in organic combination. The iodine found in iodo-thyrin must certainly be derived from the food, but the mere tra...
