The Secretary-General expressed his intention last year to institute a Steering Group as a successor to the high-level Task Force that was established as a follow-up to the International Conference on Disarmament and Development, held at United Nations Headquarters in September 1987. In line with his intention, the Steering Group held its inaugural meeting in May and agreed on a programme to hi...

The study of target injection, detection, measurement of laser focal point, and laser beam steering have started under co-research in Japan. The smooth-bore gas gun is developed for accurate injection. The applications of divergent laser beam and Arago spot are described for accurate measurement of target position and laser focal point. Magnetic lens for target trajectory adjustment by centerin...

We investigate the propagation of spatial solitons in cylindrical strongly nonlocal media by a method of image beam of light. The dynamic force of the soliton steering resulting from the boundary effect is equivalent to the force between the soliton beam and the image beam. The trajectory of the soliton is analytically studied, which is in good agreement with the experimental results.

During prostate needle insertion, the gland rotates and displaces resulting in needle placement inaccuracy. To compensate for this error, we proposed master-slave needle steering under real-time MRI in a previous study. For MRIcompatibility and accurate motion control, the master (and the slave) robot uses piezo actuators. These actuators however, are non-backdrivable. To cope with this issue, ...

Multiple-wheel all-terrain vehicles without a steering system must use great amounts of power when skid steering. Skid steering is modeled with emphasis put on the ground contact forces of the wheels according to the mass distribution of the vehicle. To increase steering efficiency, it is possible to modify the distribution of the normal contact forces on the wheels. This paper focuses on two a...

BACKGROUND There is limited empirical knowledge about the effect of ski geometry, particularly in the context of injury prevention in alpine ski racing. We investigated the effect of sidecut radius on biomechanical variables related to the mechanics of turning. METHODS During a field experiment, six European Cup level athletes skied on three different pairs of giant slalom (GS) skis varying i...

Magnetic resonance navigation (MRN) offers the potential for real-time steering of drug particles and cells to targets throughout the body. In this technique, the magnetic gradients of an MRI scanner perform image-based steering of magnetically-labelled therapeutics through the vasculature and into tumours. A major challenge of current techniques for MRN is that they alternate between pulse seq...

OBJECTIVE To develop clinical practice guidelines for the use of restraining therapies to maintain physical and psychological safety of adult and pediatric patients in the intensive care unit. PARTICIPANTS A multidisciplinary, multispecialty task force of experts in critical care practice was convened from the membership of the American College of Critical Care Medicine (ACCM), the Society of...
