We analyze radial velocities for a sample of 31 Class I and flat spectrum protostars in TaurusAuriga, ρ Ophiuchi and Serpens for evidence of the global dynamical state of extremely young stellar populations buried within parental molecular clouds. Comparing the radial velocity of each protostar to that of the local CO gas, we are able to constrain the one dimensional radial velocity dispersion ...

Currently ∼36 different absorption bands have been detected in the infrared spectra of cold, dense interstellar and circumstellar environments. These are attributed to the vibrational transitions of ∼17 different molecules frozen on dust grains. We review identification issues and summarize the techniques required to extract information on the physical and chemical evolution of these ices. Both...

Rapidly accreting massive protostars undergo a phase of deuterium shell burning during pre-main sequence evolution that causes them to swell to tenths of an AU in radius. During this phase, those with close binary companions will overflow their Roche lobes and begin transferring mass. Since massive stars frequently have companions at distances well under 1 AU, this process may affect the early ...

At the earliest evolutionary stages, massive star-forming regions are deeply embedded within their natal cores and not observable at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. Interferometric high-spatial resolution mm dust continuum observations of one very young high-mass starforming region disentangle its cluster-like nature already at the very beginning of the star formation process. The derive...

The results of a maser survey toward ninety-nine protostars in the Orion molecular cloud complex are presented. The target sources are low-mass protostars identified from infrared observations. Single-dish observations were carried out in the water maser line at 22 GHz and the methanol class I maser lines at 44, 95, and 133 GHz. Most of the detected sources were mapped to determine the source p...

A review of work on the small, compact, nearby young cluster IC 348 is given. This region is particularly important because it is well surveyed at a variety of wavelengths and intermediate in nature between dense clusters and loose associations. Its earliest type star is B5 and it contains a few hundred stellar members as well as some brown dwarfs, protostars, Herbig-Haro objects and starless s...

We present detections of the absorption band at 3.53 μm due to solid methanol toward three low-mass young stellar objects located in the Serpens and Chameleon molecular cloud complexes. The sources were observed as part of a large spectroscopic survey of ≈40 protostars. This is the first detection of solid methanol in the vicinity of low mass (M <∼ 1 M ) young stars and shows that the formation...

We compare the infrared colors predicted by theoretical models of protostellar envelopes and protoplanetary disks with initial observations of young stellar objects made with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on the Spitzer Space Telescope (Werner et al. 2004, Fazio et al. 2004). Disk and envelope models characterized by infall and/or accretion rates found in previous studies can quantitatively ...

Submillimeter observations with ALMA will be the essential next step in our understanding of how stars and planets form. Key projects range from detailed imaging of the collapse of pre-stellar cores and measuring the accretion rate of matter onto deeply embedded protostars, to unravelling the chemistry and dynamics of high-mass star-forming clusters and highspatial resolution studies of protopl...

We consider the structure of self-gravitating marginally stable accretion disks in galactic centers in which a small fraction of the disk mass has been converted into protostars. We find that proto-stars accrete gaseous disk matter at prodigious rates. Mainly due to the stellar accretion luminosity, the disk heats up and geometrically thickens, shutting off further disk fragmentation. The exist...
