We give new bounds on the star arboricity and the caterpillar arboricity of planar graphs with given girth. One of them answers an open problem of Gyárfás and West: there exist planar graphs with track number 4. We also provide new NP-complete problems.

The STAR level-3 trigger is a MYRINET interconnected ALPHA processor farm, performing online tracking of N 53!#, 58000 particles (N 10*/5 445 per track) with a design input rate of R"100 Hz. A large-scale prototype system was tested in 12/99 with laser and cosmic particle events. ( 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Based on the results of applying the extended ADC emission model to three Z-track sources: GX 340+0, GX 5-1 and Cyg X-2, we propose an explanation of the Z-track sources in which the Normal and Horizontal Branches are dominated by the increasing radiation pressure of the neutron star. The emitted flux becomes several times super-Eddington at the Hard Apex and Horizontal Branch and we suggest th...

Lightcurves of three eclipsing binaries (HD 143654 = TV Nor, HD 184035 = HR 7422 and HD 185257 = HR 7464) in seven colours are analyzed and their photometric elements are given. Published radial velocities of two of them allow some constraints to be put on the masses of the components, while new radial velocities allow us to estimate the mass and absolute radius of each component of the system ...

We propose that accretion can induce a neutron star magnetic field decay because the ferromagnetic accreted matter screens the magnetic field of neutron star. Our model results suggest that: (i) the surface magnetic field decay is inversely correlated with the accretion mass in the X-ray binary accretion phase as∆M−0.4, (ii) the ‘Bottom Field Strength ’ of about 108 G can occur when the accrete...

The expressions for the turbulent pressure, equation of state and thermodynamic quantities taking account of turbulent pressure are derived in the framework of the mixing-length theory of convection. The numerical computations indicate that the turbulent pressure in the region close to the surface of a red giant or anAGB star can reach a value of 30-40 percent of the total pressure. A compariso...

We present unified chemical and spectrophotometric evolutionary synthesis models that allow to describe composite stellar populations in a chemically consistent way. Keeping track of the ISM abundance at birth of each star and using sets of input physics (stellar yields, tracks, spectra) for different metallicities we account for the increasing initial metallicity of successive stellar generati...

Intermap’s across track interferometric synthetic aperture radar, called STAR-3i, entered commercial service in February 1997. STAR-3i was successfully upgraded in late 2001 to reflect a shift in market demand toward higher image resolution and improved terrain elevation products. This paper is a follow-on from a 1999 paper that discussed the challenges faced in commercializing a research effor...

let $d$ be an integral domain and $star$ a semistar operation stable and of finite type on it. we define the semistar dimension (inequality) formula and discover their relations with $star$-universally catenarian domains and $star$-stably strong s-domains. as an application, we give new characterizations of $star$-quasi-pr"{u}fer domains and um$t$ domains in terms of dimension ine...

Small alterations to the structure of a star-shaped template totally change its mode of operation. The hexapyridyl template directs the conversion of a porphyrin dimer to the cyclic hexamer, but deleting one pyridine site changes the product to the cyclic decamer, while deleting two binding sites changes the product to the cyclic octamer. This surprising switch in selectivity is explained by th...
