MgM2O4 (M = Mn, Fe, Co) spinels, which transform into rock-salt phases on Mg incorporation, are attractive cathode materials for future battery applications. In this study, we investigated the energetics and reconstruction of spinel surfaces using first-principles calculations. We found that spinels stabilized when atoms in topmost layer occupied rock-salt-like sites. With an increase number at...

Applying dielectric spectroscopy and other techniques, the authors find antipolar ordering at structural magnetic transitions of lacunar spinels GaNb${}_{4}$Se${}_{8}$ GaTa${}_{4}$Se${}_{8}$, materials with substantial spin-orbit coupling. It arises from polar distortions moleculelike Nb${}_{4}$Se${}_{4}$ Ta${}_{4}$Se${}_{4}$ clusters, typical for crystalline lattice spinels. Moreover, aside di...

Many compounds with the spinel structure type have been analyzed for their thermoelectric properties. Published data was used to augment experimental results presented here to select promising thermoelectric spinels. Compounds studied here include C~~,~Al~.5Cr2Se4, Cu05Coo.5Cr2Se4, C~o,~Ino,~Cr2Se~ and CuIr2Se4. Many exhibit low lattice thermal conductivity of about 20 mW/cmK, independent of te...

We analysed the major, minor and trace elements chemistry of forty-two Cr-spinels from four Siberian kimberlites. They showed a wide range in Mg# (Mg/(Mg + Fe2+); 0.42–0.78) Cr# (Cr/(Cr Al); 0.32–0.92) common trend increasing with decreasing Mg#. The major element classification schemes suggested that there were spinels deriving peridotitic source (Xen) crystallised kimberlitic melts (Chr). Las...
