Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) has been used extensively against agricultural pests and in public health programs for the control of mosquitoes. Commercial formulations of HCH consist of a mixture of four isomers, alpha, beta, gamma, and delta. While all these isomers pose serious environmental problems, beta-HCH is more problematic due to its longer persistence in the environment. We have studied...

PURPOSE To report a case of an acute onset of delayed postoperative endophthalmitis that was caused by Sphingomonas paucimobilis. METHODS This case demonstrates an acute onset of delayed postoperative endophthalmitis at 3 months after uneventful cataract extraction and posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation. We performed vitrectomy, intraocular lens and capsular bag removal, and intr...

Nosocomial Sphingomonas paucimobilis infections can arise from contaminated water and the contaminated hands of hospital staff. Within a 1-month period, we isolated six S. paucimobilis strains, including four from blood cultures of four patients and two from hospital environment specimens including tap water and a bathtub in a hemato/oncology unit. We described here these strains' molecular epi...

Nationally distributed medications from compounding pharmacies, which typically adhere to less stringent quality-control standards than pharmaceutical manufacturers, can lead to multistate outbreaks. We investigated a cluster of 6 patients in a Maryland hospital who had Sphingomonas paucimobilis bloodstream infections in November 2007. Of the 6 case-patients, 5 (83%) had received intravenous fe...

There is an ongoing debate about the clinical significance of Sphingomonas paucimobilis as a virulent bacterial pathogen. In the present study, we investigated the presence of different virulence factors and genes in Sphingomonas bacteria. We utilized phylogenetic, comparative genomics and bioinformatics analysis to investigate the potentiality of Sphingomonas bacteria as virulent pathogenic ba...

BACKGROUND Sphingomonas paucimobilis is rarely isolated from clinical specimens and it is associated with a great variety of infections. The aim of this study is to investigate the microbiological and clinical features of S paucimobilis infection in southern Taiwan. METHODS S paucimobilis isolates from the microbiology laboratory of Chi-Mei Medical Center and their relevant clinical data from...

Topsoil samples were collected from eight golf courses in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, and enrichment cultures were carried out with a basal-salt medium containing 0.2% 4-tert-octylphenol polyethoxylate (OPPEO) as sole carbon source. OPPEO-degrading activity was detected in one of the samples, from which a strain of OPPEO-degrading bacterium was isolated. The isolated bacterium grew on a nutrit...

Background:  Sphingomonas paucimobilis is a gram-negative pathogen that causes urinary tract infections, diarrhea, septicemia, and wound infections. Due to the spread of patients with high mortality but low in Sphingomonas paucimobilis, it has been isolated from different clinical samples increasing antibiotic resistance all over world.   Objectives: The aim our research was look at e...

The cellular fatty acid composition of Pseudomonas paucimobilis (IIk-1) and group IIk-2, Ve-1, and Ve-2 was determined by gas-liquid chromatography. The unnamed groups were readily distinguished from P. paucimobilis by cellular fatty acids. The data strongly suggest that these bacteria may be additional species of Pseudomonas and Flavobacterium.
