Based on classical plate theory, standard and spectral finite element methods are extended for vibration and dynamic stability of axially moving thin plates subjected to in-plane forces. The formulation of the standard method earned through Hamilton’s principle is independent of element type. But for solving numerical examples, an isoparametric quadrilateral element is developed using Lagrange ...

We introduce a method for constructing an element-by-element sparse approximate inverse (SAI) preconditioner designed to be effective in a massively-parallel spectral element modeling environment involving nonsymmetric systems. This new preconditioning approach is based on a spectral optimization of a low-resolution preconditioned system matrix (PSM). We show that the local preconditioning matr...
In this paper, a triangular spectral element method using orthogonal rational functions as basis is presented for problems on complex domains.
Abstract: In the framework of the spectral element method for a model elliptic equation, we present the numerica...
In the present study, a spectral finite element method is developed for free and forced transverse vibration of Levy-type moderately thick rectangular orthotropic plates based on first-order shear deformation theory. Levy solution assumption was used to convert the two-dimensional problem into a one-dimensional problem. In the first step, the governing out-of-plane differential equations are tr...
Unstructured hexahedral mesh generation is a critical part of the modeling process in the Spectral-Element Method (SEM). We present some examples of seismic wave propagation in complex geological models, automatically meshed on a parallel machine based upon CUBIT (Sandia Laboratory, cubit.sandia.gov), an advanced 3D unstructured hexahedral mesh generator that offers new opportunities for seismo...
In this paper the turbulent flow in a cyclonic separator is investigated with large-eddy simulation (LES) based on a cylindrical coordinate spectral-element-Fourier method (SEM) using the Smagorinsky subgrid-scale model in its standard and dynamic formulation. The results show slight model differences, but both have poor agreement with measurements. The cylindrical-coordinate system geometry us...
Wavelet analysis is now a method of well recognized effectiveness in a range of disciplines, including atmospheric science e.g., 39 publications from NCAR from [10] to [11]. Our recent research includes applying a wavelet-based criterion to identify coherent structures in turbulence simulations, §2.1. Also, as detailed in recent reports [6 §1; 7; 8 & op. cit. therein], a need is well known and ...
We present a numerical method, based on a coupling of finite elements and boundary elements, to solve a fluid–solid interaction problem posed in the plane. The boundary unknowns involved in our formulation are approximated by a spectral method. We provide error estimates for the Galerkin method and present numerical results that illustrate the accuracy of our scheme.
