Gold mines in the Yellowknife, NT, region--in particular, the Giant Mine--operated from 1949-99, releasing 237,000 tonnes of waste arsenic trioxide (As2O3) dust, among other compounds, from gold ore extraction and roasting processes. For the first time, we show the geospatial distribution of roaster-derived emissions of several chemical species beyond the mine property on otherwise undisturbed ...

We present results from our model of collision rates in the present-day Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt and Centaur region. We have updated previous results to allow for new estimates of the total disk population, in order to examine surface activation and modification time scales due to cratering impacts. We extend previous results showing that the surfaces of EdgeworthKuiper Belt objects are not primor...

Uncertainty quantification (UQ) in eruption source parameters, like tephra volume, plume height, and umbrella cloud radius, is a challenge for volcano scientists because deposits are often sparsely sampled due to burial, erosion, related factors. We find that UQ improved by coupling an advection-diffusion model with two Bayesian inversion approaches: (a) robust but computationally expensive Gen...

Analyses of fracturing and thermal performance of fractured reservoirs in engineered geothermal system (EGS) are extended from a depth of 5 km to 10 km, and models for flow and heat transfer in EGS are improved. Effects of the geofluid flow direction choice, distance between fractures, fracture width, permeability, radius, and number of fractures, on reservoir heat drawdown time are computed. T...

We investigated whether endothelial-dependent arterial constriction during reduced shear can be measured using phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging (PCMRI). A cross-section of the femoral artery was acquired during a 5-minute distal occlusion in 33 subjects. Systolic shear rate and radius were measured from the velocity profile via a best-fit parabola. Systolic shear rate decreased immedia...

Preliminary results are presented that infer that 2 sec should be added to the tabular values for P phases and 4 sec to the tabular values for S phases of seismic travel times. From seismic evidence, the radius of the inner core of the Earth is 1229-1250 km; the radius of the outer core is 3482-3485 km. Data are presented relating resolving power with error of measurement for the Earth's mantle.
