Soil has been used to generate electrical power in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) and exhibited several potential applications. This study aimed to reveal the effect of soil properties on the generated electricity and the diversity of soil source exoelectrogenic bacteria. Seven soil samples were collected across China and packed into air-cathode MFCs to generate electricity over a 270 days period....

3,3′-Diaminobenzidine was applied at doses of 5, 10, 25, and 50 mg kg−1 of soil and their effects were evaluated on indigenous soil microbial communities (viable aerobic bacteria, fungal populations, aerobic N2-fixing bacteria, denitrifying, and nitrifying bacteria), and soil enzymatic activities (acid and alkaline phosphatases, arylsulfatase, and dehydrogenase). At doses of 5 or 10 mg kg−1, 3,...

Soil bacteria and fungi play key roles in the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems, yet our understanding of their responses to climate change lags significantly behind that of other organisms. This gap in our understanding is particularly true for drylands, which occupy ∼41% of Earth´s surface, because no global, systematic assessments of the joint diversity of soil bacteria and fungi have be...

A new Streptomycete was isolated from soils of Andhra Pradesh in India. The morphological, cultural, physiological and biochemical characters were studied, compared to known species and identified as a new species of Streptomyces rufus. Antibiotic activity of the strain was tested against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as fungi and yeasts.

Very little is known regarding the ecology of Nitrosospira sp. strain AF-like bacteria, a unique group of ammonia oxidizers within the Betaproteobacteria. We studied the response of Nitrosospira sp. strain AF-like ammonia oxidizers to changing environmental conditions by applying molecular methods and physiological measurements to Californian grassland soil manipulated in the laboratory. This s...

runoff production process is a key hydrological component illustrating watersheds health. water infiltration in soil is also one of the determinant factors on runoff generation for which many techniques were used to improve it. however, the role of microorganisms for the improvement of water infiltration in soil has been less considered. the present study therefore tried to investigate the effe...

The complete genome sequence of Nitrosomonas communis strain Nm2, a mesophilic betaproteobacterial ammonia oxidizer isolated from Mediterranean soils in Corfu, Greece, is reported here. This is the first genome to describe a cluster 8 Nitrosomonas species and represents an ammonia-oxidizing bacterium commonly found in terrestrial ecosystems.

Soil treatment of wastewater has the potential to achieve high purification efficiency, yet the understanding and predictability of purification with respect to removal of viruses and other pathogens is limited. Research has been completed to quantify the removal of virus and bacteria through the use of microbial surrogates and conservative tracers during controlled experiments with three-dimen...

Several methods for dispersion of soil were tested for possible use in procedures for extraction of bacteria. Physical cell damage on cells and efficiency in extraction of indigenous cells from soil, were investigated. Cell damage by the dispersion methods was investigated by measuring the physical cell integrity and viability of pure cultures of Escherichiu coli and Bacillus subtilis, as well ...

Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) is one of the most important environmental challenges. Phytoremediation of oil-polluted soil depends on microorganisms of the rhizosphere. This study attempts to evaluate the microbial impact of Zea mays rhizosphere during a 60 day period using three different treatments: control soil, oil-polluted soil and oil-polluted soil including fertilizer (NH4No3, K2HP...
