[1] Radar signals can penetrate loose sediments such as dust, sand, and alluvium to reveal buried geologic structures obscured in visible and infrared images. In anticipation of data from instruments such as the MARSIS and SHARAD radar sounders and potential future imaging SAR and rover-mounted GPR instruments, measurements have been made to characterize electrical loss factors of a Martian dus...

Previous synchrotron X-ray microprobe measurements of Zn speciation in contaminated and uncontaminated soils have identified phyllosilicate as the main sequestration phase. The emphasis now is focused on comparing the nature and properties of neoformed and geogenic phyllosilicate species to understand natural attenuation processes. Refined structural characterization of the two types of Zn-cont...

Soil moisture (SM) is a highly relevant variable for agriculture, the emergence of floods and a key variable in the global energy and water cycle. In the last years, several satellite missions have been launched especially to derive large-scale products of the SM dynamics on the Earth. However, in situ validation data are often scarce. We developed a new method to retrieve SM of bare soil from ...

Here we present a chemical-biology study in the model soil bacterium Paracoccus denitrificans, where we show ligand-specific control of nitrate assimilation. Stabilization of a G-quadruplex in the promoter region of the nas genes, encoding the assimilatory nitrate/nitrite reductase system, is achieved using known quadruplex ligands and results in attenuation of gene transcription.

One of the most important anthropogenic pollution types in countries with oil production is soil and water contamination by petroleum. Phytoremediation is an emerging green technology for cleaning up polluted soil. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to study the effect of oil-contaminated soil on Echinacea purpurea with four concentrations of crude oil - contaminated soil: control = 0, 0.5% ...

Surface soil moisture is a key variable needed to understand and predict the climate. L-band microwave radiometry seems to be the best technique to remotely measure the soil moisture content, since the influence of other effects such as surface roughness and vegetation is comparatively small. This work describes a numerical model developed to efficiently compute the four elements of the Stokes ...
