Sodium or calcium polystyrene sulfonate (Kayexalate or analog) is an ion-exchange resin commonly used to treat hyperkalaemia in patients with chronic kidney disease. It is known to cause digestive complications, such as nausea, vomiting and constipation. Although rare, colonic necrosis and perforation are very severe complications associated with the medication. In this case report, we present ...
Growth of Peptostreptococcus anaerobius was shown to be totally inhibited by sodium polyanethol sulfonate (SPS). Other anaerobic cocci grew in the presence of SPS although some strains of Peptococcus prevotii and Peptococcus magnus showed delayed growth. A SPS disk assay for the presumptive identification of P. anaerobius is described.
Intradiffusion coefficients of sodium alkylsulfonates [CH3-(CH2)n-1SO-3 Na+, CnSNa] (n = 5-9, 11) in mixtures with heavy water were measured by the PGSE-NMR technique at 25 degrees C. A slope change in the experimental trends permits the determination of the critical micelle concentration (CMC). In the micellar composition range, solubilized TMS molecules were used to determine the micelle intr...
The modes of action of sulfated polyanions, sodium amylosulfate and sodium polyanethol sulfonate were studied. These agents inhibited the activity of lysozyme and formed insoluble complexes with this enzyme. The polyanions inactivated complement and lessened the effec tiveness of antibiotics against bacteria.
