I For the past 30 years, there has arisen a new trend of worldwide studies on Ancient Chinese culture and thought. This new trend is indeed about excavated materials. In ancient China, they had a custom such that, when people died, they were buried with the articles they had used in order to commemorate the dead. And these articles included such literary material as bamboo slips, wood slips, si...

Rectus Sternalis is a rare fl at slip of muscle present parasternally in the thoracic wall. During the regular dissection of pectoral region, three slips of Sternalis muscle were observed bilaterally in an adult male cadaver. On the right side there was a single slip (RS1) while on the left side two slips (RS2 and RS3) were present. All three slips were present anterior to the Pectoralis Major ...

ABSTRACT Liquid-repellent surfaces based on slippery liquid-infused porous substrates (SLIPS) were prepared from porous, nanostructured silicon surfaces with different surface functionalization, infused with the polar ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methylsulfate ([C2mim]MeSO4). Contrary to nonpolar SLIPS based on perfluorinated substrates and infusion liquids, [C2mim]MeSO4 forms stabl...

The properties of one-dimensional superconductors are strongly influenced by topological fluctuations of the order parameter, known as phase slips, which cause the decay of persistent current in superconducting rings and the appearance of resistance in superconducting wires. Despite extensive work, quantitative studies of phase slips have been limited by uncertainty regarding the order paramete...

We present a theory for a finite-length superconducting nanowire coupled to an environment. We show that in the absence of dissipation quantum phase slips always destroy superconductivity, even at zero temperature. Dissipation stabilizes the superconducting phase. We apply this theory to explain the "antiproximity effect" recently seen by Tian et al. in zinc nanowires.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of modifying aluminum oxide slips with magnesium oxide (MgO) to create a jointing material for In-Ceram Alumina. Jointed In-Ceram Alumina bars with In-Ceram Alumina slips containing 0-1.0 mass% MgO were examined by a three-point bending test. Joint-free bars were also tested as controls. Fracture surfaces were evaluated by scanning electro...

Rodents use active whisker movements to explore their environment. The "slip hypothesis" of whisker-related tactile perception entails that short-lived kinematic events (abrupt whisker movements, called "slips", due to bioelastic whisker properties that occur during active touch of textures) carry the decisive texture information. Supporting this hypothesis, previous studies have shown that sli...

Quantum phase slips in superconducting loops threaded by an external magnetic field provide a coupling between macroscopic quantum states with supercurrents circulating in opposite directions. We analyze the dynamics of the phase slips as a function of the superconducting loop length, from fully coherent dynamics for short loops to dissipative dynamics for the long ones. For intermediate length...
