The first part of this paper reports a comparative study of the document classifications produced by the use of the single linkage, complete linkage, group average, and Ward clustering methods. Studies of cluster membership and of the effectiveness of cluster searches support previous findings that suggest that the single linkage classifications are rather different from those produced by the o...

Glasses have liquid-like structure, but exhibit solid-like properties. A central question concerns the relation between the structure and mechanical properties of glasses, but structural changes remain difficult to resolve. We use a novel combination of rheology and x-ray scattering to resolve structural changes in colloidal glasses and link them directly to their mechanical behavior. By combin...

We use Monte Carlo techniques and analytical methods to study the phase diagram of multicomponent Widom-Rowlinson models on a square lattice: there are M species all with the same fugacity z and a nearest neighbor hard core exclusion between unlike particles. Simulations show that for M between two and six there is a direct transition from the gas phase at z < z d (M) to a demixed phase consist...

We propose new approach to numerical study of quantum spin systems. Our method is based on a fact that one can use any set of states for the path integral as long as it is complete. We apply our method to one-dimensional quantum spin system with next-to-nearest neighbor interactions. We found remarkable improvement in negative sign problem.

We calculate an analytical expression for the terrace-width distribution P(s) for an interacting step system with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions. Our model is derived by mapping the step system onto a statistically equivalent one-dimensional system of classical particles. The validity of the model is tested with several numerical simulations and experimental results. We explore...

Using Monte Carlo simulation and fundamental measure theory we study the phase diagram of a two-dimensional lattice gas model with a nearest neighbor hard core exclusion and a next-to-nearest neighbor finite repulsive interaction. The model presents two competing ranges of interaction and, in common with many experimental systems, exhibits a low density solid phase, which melts back to the flui...

We analyzed the spatio-temporal structure of hooded gull flocks with a portable stereo camera system. The 3-dimensional positions of individuals were reconstructed from pairs of videos. The motions of each individual were analyzed, and both gliding and flapping motions were quantified based on the velocity time series. We analyzed the distributions of the nearest neighbor's position in terms of...

We investigate correlation functions in a periodic box-ball system. For the second and the third nearest neighbor correlation functions, we give explicit formulae obtained by combinatorial methods. A recursion formula for a specific N -point functions is also presented.

We demonstrate that nearest neighbor molecular adsorption can be sterically hindered on the Si(111)-7×7 surface reconstruction. This breaks the energetic equivalence of corner and edge di-σ attachment geometries and allows a translationally ordered organic layer to be templated directly on the 7×7 reconstruction.

We consider an array of units each of which can be in one of three states. Unidirectional transitions between these states are governed by Markovian rate processes. The interactions between units occur through a dependence of the transition rates of a unit on the states of the units with which it interacts. This coupling is nonlocal, that is, it is neither an all-to-all interaction (referred to...
