We studied the effects of light quality and nutrient supply on growth and nitrogen accumulation in silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) seedlings to test three hypotheses: (1) growth of birch seedlings is sensitive to changes in light quality; (2) the response of birch seedling growth to light quality depends on nutrient supply; and (3) assimilation and allocation of nitrogen by birch seedlings a...

The photodegradation of the aryloxyphenoxy propionic herbicide cyhalofop-butyl (2R)-2-[4-(4-cyano-2-fluorophenoxy)phenoxy]butylpropanoate (CyB), and of its primary metabolite (2R)-2-[4-(4-cyano-2-fluorophenoxy)phenoxy]propanoic acid (CyA) was studied in water at different irradiation wavelengths. The sunlight irradiation was investigated also in the presence of humic acid (HA), Fe oxide, titani...

The impact of particle composition on metal oxidation state, and on changes in oxidation state with simulated atmospheric aging, are investigated experimentally in flame-generated nanoparticles containing Mn, Cr, and Fe. The results demonstrate that the initial fraction of Cr(VI) within the particles decreases with increasing total metal concentration in the flame. In contrast, the initial Mn o...

We present a cost-effective concentrating photovoltaic system composed of a prism and a compound parabolic concentrator (P-CPC). In this approach, the primary collector consists of a prism, a solid compound parabolic concentrator (CPC), and a slab waveguide. The prism, which is placed on the input aperture of CPC, directs the incoming sunlight beam to be parallel with the main axes of parabolic...

Ir(III) dyes used as sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells produced quantum yields approaching unity for conversion of absorbed photons to current under simulated air mass 1.0 sunlight, with current production resulting from ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer states, rather than the typical metal-to-ligand charge-transfer states in ruthenium-based cells.

Halide ions (X(-)) as cheap and abundant electron donors are oxidized with simulated sunlight in a photocatalytic reaction based on robust antimony porphyrins acting as red-light harvesting multielectron transfer sensitizers. Besides halogen formation (X2/X3(-)) this solar energy storing process under certain conditions also accumulates hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as a second energy-rich compound.

A supramolecular lithium cation assemblies of crown ether, [Li 12-crown-4](+), has been used to replace conventional tetraalkylammonium counterion in thiolate/disulfide (ET(-)/BET) mediated dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs), which exhibit high stability and efficiency of 6.61% under 100 mW·cm(-2) simulated sunlight illumination.
