Ego depletion refers to decrements in self-control performance resulting from prior use of self-control. The ego effect has received much research attention, but the more recent literature reports small or null effects. This registered report examined moderating task similarity on effect. We predicted a crossover interaction between type primary and secondary such that engaging demanding should...
abstract while task-based instruction is considered as the most effective way to learn a language in the related literature, it is oversimplified on various grounds. different variables may affect how students are engaged with not only the language but also with the task itself. the present study was conducted to investigate language and task related engagement on the basis of the task typolog...
Studies of the attentional blink (AB) indicate that similarity modulates the magnitude of the impairment in reporting the second of two masked targets. The present experiments tested whether similarity-based modulations of the AB are determined by all object dimensions or by task-relevant dimensions only. Similarity between target faces was manipulated on two dimensions, only one of which was t...
In this paper we present our systems for calculating the degree of semantic similarity between two texts that we submitted to the Semantic Textual Similarity task at *SEM-2013 shared task. Our systems predict similarity using a regression over features based on the following sources of information: string similarity, topic distributions of the texts based on latent Dirichlet allocation, and sim...
In Semantic Textual Similarity (STS), systems rate the degree of semantic equivalence, on a graded scale from 0 to 5, with 5 being the most similar. This year we set up two tasks: (i) a core task (CORE), and (ii) a typed-similarity task (TYPED). CORE is similar in set up to SemEval STS 2012 task with pairs of sentences from sources related to those of 2012, yet different in genre from the 2012 ...
This submission to the MIREX 2009 Audio Similarity Task is a variant of the algorithm described in [1]. For comparison to the MIREX 2007 Audio Similarity Task, also the 2007 algorithm is re-submitted, which ranked first in 2007.
We introduce perturbation kernels, a new class of similarity measure for information retrieval that casts word similarity in terms of multi-task learning. Perturbation kernels model uncertainty in the user’s query by choosing a small number of variations in the relative weights of the query terms to build a more complete picture of the query context, which is then used to compute a form of expe...
We summarise the organisation and results of the first shared task aimed at detecting the most similar texts in a large multilingual collection. The dataset of the shared was based on Wikipedia dumps with interlanguage links with further filtering to ensure comparability of the paired articles. The eleven system runs we received have been evaluated using the TREC evaluation metrics.
We investigate a multi-task approach to similarity discriminant analysis, where we propose treating the estimation of the different class-conditional distributions of the pairwise similarities as multiple tasks. We show that regularizing these estimates together using a leastsquares regularization weighted by a task-relatedness matrix can reduce the resulting maximum a posteriori classification...
