Binary nanoclusters are of great interest for understanding fundamental phenomena related to applied materials science. Herein, neutral silicon-rich silicon−boron clusters (SinBm, n = 3−8, m = 1−2) are characterized by means of resonant infrared-ultraviolet two-color ionization (IR-UV2CI) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and quantum chemical calculations. Global energy optimizations are employe...
A new size-selected cluster deposition technique referred to as "parallel-deposition" is presented. An ion beam of multi-sized Aun clusters was spatially separated into individual cluster sizes by utilizing a Wien filter and the clusters spatially separated based on their atomic sizes were simultaneously deposited on a SiO2/Si(100) substrate. Parallel-deposited Aun clusters (n = 6, 7, and 8) on...
Copper-doped tin clusters can be thermally annealed to much more stable compositions with a substantially higher copper/tin ratio. The annealed clusters are only prominent over a narrow range of compositions: CuSn(10-15)+, Cu2Sn(12-18)+, Cu3Sn(15-21)+, Cu4Sn(18-(24)+, and Cu5Sn(21-(27)+. These compositions are close to those found for W(m)Si(n)+ clusters, raising the possibility that the Cu(m)S...
The excitonic states of four small hydrogenated Si clusters (SiH4 ,Si2H6 ,Si5H12 , and Si10H16! are studied using the diffusion quantum Monte Carlo approach. The importance of using accurate guiding wave functions is stressed and we show that the quantum chemical singles-only configuration interaction method and the time-dependent density functional theory within the adiabatic local-density app...
The polarizabilities of Si clusters with 9 to 28 atoms are calculated using a density functional cluster method. The atomic geometries are based on those carefully optimized by energy minimization. The polarizability shows fairly irregular variation with cluster size, but all calculated values are higher than the polarizability of a dielectric sphere with bulk dielectric constant and equivalent...
Muscle functional magnetic resonance imaging (mfMRI) is frequently used to determine spatial patterns of muscle involvement in exercising humans. A frequent finding in mfMRI is that, even within synergistic muscle groups, signal intensity (SI) data from individual voxels can be quite heterogeneous. The purpose of this study was to develop a novel method for organizing heterogeneous mfMRI data i...
OPTICAL PROPERTIES AND CARRIER TRANSPORT IN Si/S1-xGex NANOSTRUCTURES by Eun Kyu Lee Defect-free epitaxial growth of Ge on a ~4 % lattice-mismatched single-crystal Si substrate is achieved using reduced dimension nanoscale heterostructures, where efficient structural relaxation might occur due to an enhanced adatom migrations and high surfaceto-volume ratio. For development of novel electronic ...
We report the formation of a series of metal-containing hydrogenated silicon clusters using an ion trap. Mass analyses reveal that many types of transition metal ions M(+) ( M = Hf, Ta, W, Re, Ir, etc.) react with silane (SiH4) to form dehydrogenated MSi( +)(n) cluster ions ( n = 14, 13, 12, 11, 9, respectively) as an end product, indicating that the metal atom is endohedral and stabilizes the ...
