During the 1980s, the profile of recreational water quality at Sydney’s beaches caused concern among Sydneysiders. Monitoring of recreational water quality indicated that most Sydney beaches had poor water quality, and this condition was attributed to the disposal of partiallytreated sewage at cliff-face discharges. An epidemiological study conducted in 1989–1990 attempted to determine the prev...

Las Vegas Wash, a natural wash east of Las Vegas, Nevada, carries storrnwater, groundwater drainage, and sewage effluent from two sewage treatment plants to Lake Mead. Over 80 percent of the normal discharge of approximately 3.4 m3/s (120 ft3/s) consists of effluent from the City of Las Vegas and Clark County sewage treatment plants. Beginning in the 1950s, a large wetland area developed along ...

Today, at least one-fifth of all people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water, a problem that will almost certainly worsen as the earth's population grows. Although the vast majority of industrial discharges into waterways are regulated and treated, and most cities and towns effectively monitor and treat their sewage for chemical contaminants, problems such as arsenic contamination and d...

This paper aimed to assess the magnitude of sewage pollution in an urban lake in Dhaka, Bangladesh, by using quantitative PCR of sewage-associated Bacteroides HF183 markers. PCR was also used for the quantitative detection of ruminant wastewater-associated CF128 markers along with the enumeration of traditional fecal indicator bacteria, namely enterococci. The number of enterococci in lake wate...

Protection zones of shallow unconfined aquifers in The Netherlands were calculated that allow protection against virus contamination to the level that the infection risk of 10(-4) per person per year is not exceeded with a 95% certainty. An uncertainty and a sensitivity analysis of the calculated protection zones were included. It was concluded that protection zones of 1 to 2 years travel time ...

Cleaning products are associated with many health and environmental problems. Contamination of water resources by cleaning products is more likely to occur with septic tanks as sewage treatment systems especially in karstic terrains. We explored women's ideas about water sources and the risk cleaning products pose to health and sewage in Mérida, a city in the Yucatán peninsula of Mexico. Women ...

Two media were developed that allowed both a total coliform count and an Escherichia coli count to be determined on the same medium after 24 h of incubation at 35 degrees C. The new media were tested along with two standard media on 10 surface water and 7 sewage samples. The experimental media yielded equivalent or higher counts relative to the standard media and recovered more specifically the...

Enteroviruses were isolated from influent and effluent wastewaters of two types of oxidation lagoons during an 18-month study. Isolations, performed by sewage concentration and direct assay, were low in number and did not follow a seasonal trend. The younger treatment system, using aeration and effluent chlorination, was more efficient at removing viruses than the aging, static complex.
