BACKGROUND Diabetic sensory neuropathy is a common form of microvascular complication among diabetic patients. The swiftly growing population of people living with diabetes in Ethiopia and lack of elaborated scientific data on peripheral sensory neuropathy among diabetic population in Ethiopia prompted this work. This study was set out to assess the enormity and associated factors of peripheral...

A family with neuralgic amyotrophy (idiopathic brachial plexus neuropathy) associated with a multifocal sensory neuropathy is described. Four members over two generations were affected by neuralgic amyotrophy, inherited as an apparent autosomal dominant trait; two also had a multifocal relapsing sensory neuropathy with the clinical features of Wartenberg's migrant neuropathy.

Although paraneoplastic subacute sensory neuronopathy is the most frequent presentation of peripheral neuropathy in patients with anti-Hu antibodies, other neuropathies have been reported. In order to investigate the clinical and electrophysiological manifestations of neuropathies associated with anti-Hu antibodies, we conducted a retrospective study of 20 patients. For the electrophysiological...

Paraneoplastic neurological anti-Hu syndrome is one of the most frequent remote effects of cancer and usually manifests as encephalomyelitis combined with peripheral neuropathy. Subacute sensory neuronopathy, which results from the inflammatory destruction of sensory neurone cell bodies in the dorsal root ganglia, is thought to be the principal presentation of peripheral neuropathy. In addition...

Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type 2 is a rare disorder caused by recessive mutations in the WNK1/HSN2 gene located on chromosome 12p13.33. Phenotype of the patients is characterized by severe sensory loss affecting all sensory modalities. We report a novel homozygous Lys179fsX182 (HSN2); Lys965fsX968 (WNK1/HSN2) mutation causing an early childhood onset hereditary sensory and aut...

Small-fiber sensory neuropathy with neuropathic pain had been a diagnostic challenge for neurologists. We and several groups have developed skin biopsy with quantitation of intraepidermal nerve fiber (IENF) density as a diagnostic approach. In the skin with small-fiber sensory neuropathy, there are pathological hallmarks: reduced IENF density with degeneration of subepidermal nerve plexuses and...

Multifocal acquired demyelinating sensory and motor (MADSAM) neuropathy is characterized by an asymmetric multifocal pattern of motor and sensory loss, and conduction block and other features of demyelination in nerve conduction studies. MADSAM neuropathy needs to be differentiated from chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) and multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN). In classic CI...

Background: Neuropathy is one of the most common and dangerous complications of diabetes. Diabetic neuropathy account as the most common cause of mortality among patients. Many studies suggest that neuropathy have a negative effect on quality of life. Although there is limited evidences about relationship between diabetic neuropathy and quality of life in Iran, so this study was conducted to in...

hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies (hsan) are clinically and genetically a heterogeneous group of disorders. there are overlapping variants of hsan regarding clinical manifestations and pathologic findings. five types of hsan have been described by dyck (1993) and there are two other types which have been introduced recently. we report four siblings that seem to suffer from symptomat...
