We present a junction temperature analysis of GaInN/GaN quantum well (QW) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) grown on sapphire and bulk GaN substrate by micro-Raman spectroscopy. The temperature was measured up to a drive current of 250 mA (357 A/cm). We find better cooling efficiency in dies grown on GaN substrates with a thermal resistance of 75 K/W. For dies on sapphire substrates we find values a...

Infrared-visible sum-frequency-generation spectroscopy (SFG) was used to study the molecular structure of water between a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and a sapphire substrate. The observation of SFG peaks associated with the dangling surface hydroxyl groups (3690 cm(-1)) and water bands (3000-3400 cm(-1)) indicates that the contact spot between the PDMS lens and the sapphire substrate is hete...

In this study, we used metal organic chemical vapor deposition to form gallium nitride (GaN) epilayers on c- and a-axis sapphire substrates and then used the nanoscratch technique and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to determine the nanotribological behavior and deformation characteristics of the GaN epilayers, respectively. The AFM morphological studies revealed that pile-up phenomena occurred o...

IR-visible sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy has been used in a total internal reflection geometry to study the molecular structure of polystyrene (PS) at PS/sapphire and PS/air interfaces, simultaneously. The symmetric vibrational modes of the phenyl rings dominate the SFG spectra at the PS/air interface as compared to the antisymmetric vibrational modes at the PS/sapphire interface....

In this paper, we characterized aluminum/sapphire interface structure by using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. It was found that step structures of sapphire formed at the aluminum/sapphire interfaces during the liquid-phase bonding. It was discovered that the addition of silicon in aluminum significantly reduces the step growth at the interface. Silicon was found to segregate ...

We evaluated the new UniCel DxH 800 hematology analyzer (Beckman Coulter, Miami, FL) vs the Cell-Dyn Sapphire (Abbott Diagnostics, Santa Clara, CA) using 156 pediatric specimens in Microtainer tubes (Becton Dickinson, Franklin Lakes, NJ). The CBC and differential showed good interinstrument correlation, including WBCs (r = 0.995), RBCs (r = 0.992), hemoglobin (r = 0.998), mean corpuscular volum...

Characteristics of a diffusion-bonded sapphire cell for optical experiments with hot metal vapors were investigated. The sapphire cell consisted of sapphire-crystal plates and a borosilicate-glass tube, which were bonded to each other by diffusion bonding without any binders or glues. The glass tube was attached to a vacuum manifold using the standard method applied in glass processing, filled ...

Well oriented vertical ZnO nanowires (NWs) are grown on c-plane sapphire via a vaporphase transport process using an Au thin film as a catalyst. This new finding is unexpected due to the fact that the lattice mismatch between the zinc oxide and the underlying substrate is 18%. Xray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that single-crystal, wurtzite NWs grow in the [0001] direction normal to the basa...

Controlling the growth of zinc oxide nanowires is necessary to optimize the performance of nanowire-based devices such as photovoltaic solar cells, nano-generators, or light-emitting diodes. With this in mind, we investigate the nucleation and growth mechanisms of ZnO nanowires grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy either on O-polar ZnO or on sapphire substrates. Whatever the substrate, ZnO...

A submicrometer-thick zirconium dioxide film was deposited on the tip of a polished C-plane sapphire fiber to fabricate a temperature sensor that can work to an extended temperature range. Zirconium dioxide was selected as the thin film material to fabricate the temperature sensor because it has relatively close thermal expansion to that of sapphire, but more importantly it does not react appre...
