Unlike most biofuel species, Jatropha curcas has promise for use in marginal lands, but it may serve an additional role by stabilizing soils. We evaluated the growth and structural responsiveness of young J. curcas plants to diverse soil conditions. Soils included a sand, a sandy-loam, and a clay-loam from eastern Mexico. Growth and structural parameters were analyzed for shoots and roots, alth...

We report initial findings around the Facebook and Twitter adoption trends of 840 fire and police departments affected by Hurricane Sandy. The data show that adoption increased during the time period directly surrounding Hurricane Sandy. Despite this increase, the creation of new online accounts since that time has been declining and overall adoption rates seem to be stabilizing. Lastly, the da...

Twitter is a very important source for obtaining information, especially during events such as natural disasters. Users can spread information in Twitter either by crafting new posts, which are called “tweets,” or by using retweet mechanism to re-post the previously created tweets. During natural disasters, identifying how likely a tweet is to be highly retweeted is very important since it can ...

This paper compares two projects that adopted social bookmarking (SB) technology in different educational contexts at the same institution, a large, research-intensive university in the north of England. The first study used social bookmarking in a multicultural postgraduate class to increase interactivity within the whole class and to produce an archive of course-related online resources to en...

A class A of graphs is called weakly addable (or bridge-addable) if for any G ∈ A and any two distinct components C1 and C2 in G, any graph that can be obtained by adding an edge between C1 and C2 is also in A. McDiarmid, Steger and Welsh conjectured in [6] that a graph chosen uniformly at random among all graphs with n vertices in a weakly addable A is connected with probability at least e−1/2...

It is shown that for 2 ≤ t ≤ n− 3, a strict t-SB(n, n− 1) design does not exist, but for n ≥ 3, a non-strict 2-SB(n, n−1) design exists. The concept of large sets for Steiner triple systems is extended to SB designs and examples of a large sets for SB designs are given.

In the preceding comment of Sato et al., these authors claim that only the rebonded SB step edge is found on the stepped Ge(001) surface. In our paper [1] we have concluded that the SB step on the Ge(001) surface exhibits both the rebonded as well as the nonbonded configuration [2]. Sato and coworkers agree with us in so far that they also discern two configurations in their STM images, namely ...

Lambir Hills National Park in Malaysian Borneo is composed of dipterocarp tree species which specialize on different soil types. Although the mechanisms contributing to this distribution of tree species are unknown, one hypothesis is that tree species at Lambir differ in their preferences for different nitrogen forms. In this study we investigated (1) whether clay soil and sandy loam soil types...

The inability of crop roots to penetrate subsoil layers in some Natal sandy soils and the associated low yields are the result of toxic quantities of aluminium. The phenomenon which is common in acid sandy soils in Naltal may be easily remedied by deep liming or leaching with gypsum.
