Four motion quartets, each ambiguous with respect to the perception of parallel-path horizontal or vertical motion, were arranged in a diamond configuration. Both global parallel-path motion (the same motion axis for all the quartets), which is typical for multiquartet stimuli, and global rotational rocking are perceived. Experiment 1 indicated that rotational rocking is established at differen...

Background: Infantile colic, cry-fuss and sleep problems are transient in the initial months of life, but they contribute to maternal depression, parenting stress and family mental health problems. In this randomized clinical trial, we aimed to explore the efficacy of massage therapy compared to rocking in reducing infantile colic symptoms including duration and number of cries, sleep duration ...

We isolated step-to-step transitions from other contributors to walking mechanics using a cyclical rocking task and then examined the contribution of individual joints to the total work required to redirect the velocity of the center of mass (COM). Nine participants were instructed to rock backward and forward in the sagittal plane, eliminating the need to swing the legs and progress forward. T...

Abstract In this paper, a review of the nonlinear aspects mechanical inerter will be presented. The historical context goes back to development isolators and absorbers in first half twentieth century. Both fluid-based devices were developed mid- late However, interest really accelerated early 2000s following work Smith [87], who coined term ‘inerter’ force–current analogy between electrical net...

Patients with Rett syndrome are known to respond well to music irrespective of their physical and verbal disabilities. Therefore, the relationship between auditory rhythm and their behavior was investigated employing a two-dimensional motion analysis system. Ten female patients aged from three to 17 years were included. When music with a simple regular rhythm started, body rocking appeared auto...

AIMS Current attempts of improving patient selection in cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) are mainly based on echocardiographic timing of myocardial velocity peaks. Regional myocardial function is neglected. Apical transverse motion (ATM) is a new parameter to quantify apical rocking as an integrative surrogate of both temporal and functional inhomogeneities within the left ventricle. In ...

We present a program that uses an optimization algorithm to fit rocking curves of ion-implanted semiconductors. This is an inverse problem that cannot be solved by simple methods. However, using recursion formulae for rocking curve calculations and a model of ion distribution after implantation, it is possible to fit experimental data with a general-purpose optimization method. In our case, we ...

We describe a rocking bed for use in incubators. Its effect was studied in 12 preterm infants with idiopathic apnoea, using each as his own control. All but one had less apnoea when the bed was rocking than when it was still. Apnoea associated with a significant fall in transcutaneous PO2 was less frequent, and fewer interventions were needed to terminate apnoeic attacks.
