When a rock sample is pressed by a force, the pressure on the crystal lattice generates an electrical field around the quart grains due to the piezoelectric effect. If a rock is saturated by conductive fluid, the relative motion between the pore fluid and the matrix solid generates an electromagnetic field due to seismoelectric conversion, and the permeating of fluid into new microcracks made b...

Insulin resistance (IR) plays a critical role in metabolic syndrome (MS). Previous studies have demonstrated that activated ROCK is increased in MS patients. However, the effect of Rho-kinase (ROCK) on IR has not been definitely determined. Thus, the aims of the present study were to determine whether ROCK activation induces IR or affects myocardial structure and function, as well as the possib...

Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by the progressive degeneration of neurons in the central and peripheral nervous system (CNS, PNS), resulting in a reduced innervation of target structures and a loss of function. A shared characteristic of many neurodegenerative diseases is the infiltration of microglial cells into affected brain regions. During early disease stages microglial cells...

Here we characterize the nutrient content in the outflow of the Green Lake 5 rock glacier, located in the Green Lakes Valley of the Colorado Front Range. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was present in all samples with a mean concentration of 0·85 mg L. A one-way analysis of variance test shows no statistical difference in DOC amounts among surface waters (p = 0·42). Average nitrate concentration...

For underground mining and construction, it is important to obtain a discontinuities’ model of rocks for simulations to evaluate rock stability around the working space and fluid flow in these rocks. We have developed a method using the fractal property of acoustic emission (AE) source distribution to construct a feasible crack distribution model. We confirmed the usefulness of the model throug...

Indurated surficial veneers are a characteristic phenomenon on exposures of unjointed granite in the southeastern states. They are caused by deposition of iron oxides in the interstices between the partially disaggregated mineral grains of the "sap" rock at the surface of the exposure. Breaching of veneers produces such peculiar erosional forms as weather pits, cavernous boulders, and pedestal ...

In this paper the possibilities for construction of an ad hoc search system to examine large-sized raster image data sets, e.g. rock images or medical images, for analysis of its characteristic parameters are presented. A new solution for image exploration based on any attributes extracted with computer image analysis by using extensions for serverside operations is proposed.
