In this paper, we used a freeform lens in a long-wave, un-cooled, refractive infrared (IR) thermal imager and present the design strategy and test results. This optical system is composed of only one freeform lens and several spheres. It can correct the distortion issue inherent to wide field-of-view systems more effectively, and achieve a better thermal imaging performance simultaneously compa...

PURPOSE To quantify the error introduced by videokeratographic corneal topography devices in using a paraxial formula to calculate power over the entire corneal surface, including areas removed from the central paraxial region where the formula is known to be invalid. METHODS Corneal refractive power and two paraxial power approximations were computed as a function of distance from the apex f...

Tohoku University, Japan is developing a new hand-held land mine detection dual-sensor (ALIS) which is equipped with a metal detector and a GPR. ALIS is equipped with a sensor tracking system, which can record the GPR and Metal detector signal with its location. The Migration processing drastically increases the quality of the imaging of the buried objects.Evaluation test of ALIS has been condu...

Gold nanoring array surfaces that exhibit strong localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) at near infrared (NIR) wavelengths from 1.1 to 1.6 μm were used as highly sensitive real-time refractive index biosensors. Arrays of gold nanorings with tunable diameter, width, and spacing were created by the nanoscale electrodeposition of gold nanorings onto lithographically patterned nanohole array c...

We present an optical method for the nanoscopic inspection of surfaces. The method is based on the spectral and polarization analysis of the light scattered by a probe nanoparticle close to the inspected surface. We explore the sensitivity to changes either in the probe-surface distance or in the refractive index of the surface.

Transmission and reflection characteristics of inductive-mesh frequency-selective surfaces were measured in the 4-12-microm range. Specific issues investigated include the effect of interelement spacing on the location and width of the resonance and the influence of superstrate and substrate refractive indices on the spectral response of the structure.

Permanent binary phase masks with planar surfaces and high tolerance to laser radiation are recorded in the volume of photo-thermo-refractive glass using the contact copying technique and binary amplitude master masks. Conversion of a Gaussian beam to higher order modes is shown.

We report a tunable optofluidic microlens configuration named the Liquid Gradient Refractive Index (L-GRIN) lens for focusing light within a microfluidic device. The focusing of light was achieved through the gradient refractive index (GRIN) within the liquid medium, rather than via curved refractive lens surfaces. The diffusion of solute (CaCl(2)) between side-by-side co-injected microfluidic ...

PURPOSE To estimate changes in surface shape and gradient refractive index (GRIN) profile in primate lenses as a function of accommodation. To quantify the contribution of surface shape and GRIN to spherical aberration changes with accommodation. METHODS Crystalline lenses from 15 cynomolgus monkeys were studied in vitro under different levels of accommodation produced by a stretching system....

Image-based Water Surface Reconstruction with Refractive Stereo Nigel Jed Wesley Morris Master of Science Graduate Department of Computer Science University of Toronto 2004 We present a system for reconstructing water surfaces using an indirect refractive stereo reconstruction method. Our work builds on previous work on image-based water reconstruction that uses single view refractive reconstru...
